FMT's Guidelines to Show and Tell awesomeness- All the rules you need.

EDIT #2: 10-10-09 7:40 AM EST: Fixed a few things.
EDIT #1: 10-9-09 9:07 PM EST: Added new section: "Grammar is key"

SECTION 1: What goes in Show and Tell?

The Show and Tell forum is for "showing and telling" about your Projects and Galleries.

The Show & Tell forum has recently been going through a lot of unrelated threads that belong in other forums, such as advertising a company or saying something completely unrelated to Scratch. These topics belong in the forum Inspiration & More, and should be posted as such.

SECTION 2: A Successful Advertisement.

Wach meh nyu scrach projekt, plz!!!!!

This is not a good example of an advertisement.

Hello, I am here to share my new project, [insert name here]. It is a [insert genre here] game that involves using the _________ skill. It is a simple concept and a very addictive interface. Please take the time to play this game and I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks,
[insert username]

This is a great example of a good advertisement. Not only does it get your point out, it makes you look like a proper human instead of some 9 year-old kid kid who doesn't care about grammar.

Remember, grammar is key!
And so are pictures!

SECTION 3: The 'I want to advertise my project but it keeps getting to the bottom of the forum page and nobody looks at it!' section.

Bumps. They are wonderful things. What are they? Let me give you an example:

_____________________________________
10/7/09
Newuser: Hello, please look at my newest project, __________!
_____________________________________
10/7/09
floatingmagictree: That was a very good project, keep up the great work!
_____________________________________
10/8/09
Newuser: bump.
_____________________________________

Do you get it? I don't think so, so let me explain it to you: If your thread/topic hasn't been posted in for about a day, you can do a short post saying "bump" to literally bump your topic all the way up so more people will notice it.

REMEMBER (IMPORTANT):
1. DO NOT BUMP MORE THAN TWICE.
2. DO NOT BUMP TOO EARLY OR TOO LATE, FOR EXAMPLE:

______________________
5-5-07
Person: Hi peoples
______________________
10-10-09
badexample1122: lawl this is a stupid thread
_________________________________________

IF YOU BUMP A THREAD THAT HAS NOT BEEN TOUCHED IN MONTHS, OR IN THIS CASE DAYS, DO NOT BUMP IT!!!!!!! THIS CAN BE CONSIDERED AS NECROPOSTING AND YOU CAN GET INFRACTED FOR IT!!!!!!! (Not to mention that it annoys peoplle)

SECTION 4: Grammar is the key.

Grammar is the only way that ANYONE will take you seriously on the forums. Would you like to hear this:

hai guise i iz a nyu scrachah i needz h3lp!!!

Or this:

Hello, I am new to Scratch and I need some help.

This may be the internet, but Grammar is still seriously important, which is why I always edit my posts for typos.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
___________________________________________
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
___________________________________________
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE END.
Well, I hope this helped, this is all there really is to success in the Show & Tell forum. Hope that my advice helped and you put it to good use!
~FMT
Not really.... I made these guidelines for new users (like yourself) to use to be successful in these forums and not totally screw up.
One thing of advice, lose the ask for a sticky as it does reflect bad on the topic. Doesn't mean that it shouldn't though. Its a nicely made thread. I especially like the necroposting tip, we need less of that.  smile
Here is a tip, you can delete the bump post, but it still moves the thread to the top of the page.
No help threads are being stickied anymore. They just get linked to in the help thread.
Well that's close enough, ain't it? I just want a lot of new users to see this, so they don't repeat the mistakes of this generation of Scratchers.
Re: FMT's Guidelines to Show and Tell awesomeness- All the rules you need.
Hey FMT - I think it's great that you are helping people out with advice on this forum.  It's a good idea to clarify what the purpose of the forum is and how it should be used.
That said, I think the part that refers to people as "twits" because their grammar might be lacking could maybe be restated with a bit more tact?  Grammar is important for clear communication - but we don't want to discourage people from posting here.  We like to think of Scratch as a friendly and accepting place  smile
Also, while excessive bumping is annoying, I'm not aware that we ever made a hard rule about a two bump maximum.   And bumping old posts ("necroposting"), while sometimes annoying, occasionally can revive old topics that still have relevance so I'm not aware of a limit in that area either.
I do appreciate your efforts to improve the forums though - thanks!
This is great! You phrased things great. My favorite was when someone bumped up a topic two years later and said "lawl this is a stupid thread". I laughed for quite a while because of the way you spelled "lawl".
I WANT THIS TO GET STICKIED!  big_smile
Noooooo! The word "twits" fits perfectly! But it is a bit rude, I suppose...
One problem I have experienced is where I find that the word "pathetic" or "ludicrous" or "idiot" or "lunatic" fits perfectly. Unfortunately, those are sort of mean... so what I do is think about it and then (if it's all right, of course) might use it with great caution. I normally use them for describing myself when I'm making myself look like an idiot (I just did that!), though, because I don't mind insulting myself. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
This type of post seems familiar... *winks*
You forgot a period. So, you don't have very good grammar.  tongue
Lol, jk.
Anyways, I think these are some pretty good rules, but P2S does make some good points.
