I don't speak Chinese, but I was curious and went to the Chinese language only forum and only saw boxes where the words should be. Howcome?

Chinese doesn't have words. It has pictures. Your computer probably doesn't have Chinese characters, so it can't display them. Interesting though... and for the other languages, I have no idea.

Actually, Chinese characters are still text, on a computer that can recognize them.

Also, to make your computer recognize Chinese characters, you have to download the Chinese Language Pack here.

No. It would just use PinYin. To display chinese on windows:

1.Go to control panel and click advanced view.
2.Click Languages and Regional Options
3.Click Languages
4. Check the Install files for East Asian languages checkbox. Follow instructions.

Well, thats only some of the words. A typewriter in chinese have about 3000 keys!

I played a computer game in Chinese and you probally need the language pack. That`s perfectly normal.You probally see weird symbols.

I understand this topic is sort of outdated...

But it's because Chinese characters use difference encodings. Most European languages (excluding Greek and Icelandic and probably a few other countries) use the latin character system - so French, Spanish, English, most of the languages in the world. North American computers aren't really expected to be used for Chinese purposes, plus since it's such a large language, they don't want to waste space (Well, not sure if that's such an issue now, but when computers first came out I bet it was - and most modern computers have such encodings pre-installed). Doesn't really make much sense... but I'm pretty sure it's true ^^

A chinese keyboard probably wouldn't have a key for each character(called idiographs).My guess would be you would hold ctrl and a combination of four digits.There would be a different code for each idiograph. This is just my rough guess.

There's no such thing as a Chinese keyboard... there's a program you can download called Google PinYin IME that you use to type Chinese characters with a regular keyboard by typing in the pronunciation of the character. A menu shows up with Chinese characters that are pronounced like that (there are many Chinese characters that sound the same). Click on the one that you are looking for. Can't find it? Press the plus key on your keyboard for more, and press the minus key on your keyboard to back up if you went too far.
