One Thing for New Users aka Get the Best Advice!

If there was one thing you could tell all new users, what would it be? Is there anything you wished someone had told you before you joined?

Well then post here and share all your tips and tricks to scratch. Hopefully we can help some people!  smile

I'll post your advice here:

If you want more people to look at your projects do three things:
1. Add it to as many revalent galleries as possible. If its about Halloween (My newest one) add it to all of the Halloween galleries. If its about pokemon, add it to all the pokemon galleries. (Should take about a month, seeing as there are about 1000 of them.
2. Make a topic on the forums. Put it in your sig. Make it interesting and so people want to click on it.
3. Make a professional project. By that I mean:
     - Decent, clear graphics
     - 0 Glitches
     - Almost 0 lag.
     - Looks like more than 5 minutes was spent on it.

These will help your projects succeed. wink

-Don't comment with useless advice, if you can't come up with something to make it better, then just tell if you like it or not, or what you think could be changed to make it more appealing.

-When commenting, make sure that if your giving advice, the person wants advice, if they didn't want any it could upset them.

-Look around for galleries that you might be interested in, you'll find people who have the same interests and you'll make more friends and get more advice.

-Don't remix projects and then call them your own! You'll get a very bad reputation for doing that.

-Never steal artwork, as that can be worse than stealing a project, because both can take a very long time to make.

-Never impersonate someone, if you have a similar name that's fine, but don't make your name the same and then act like them.

-Never use stolen graphics, be sure that if you ripped sprites or something that they can be used in Scratch, as putting a project online gives away those graphics.

-Never share inappropriate projects, you can have them on your comp, but you can't put them on Scratch.

-If you have a huge song, and you already tried compressing it in the scratch project but it is STILL too large, remove it, or shorten it if possible.

Be sure you test any sounds BEFORE sharing your project, if the volume is too high you may want to remove it, you would not want people going deaf because of your project!

-If you're going to be downloading projects that have been changed to .exe rather than a scratch project, be sure you have a virus scanner and scan before running the file.

-Try to keep all projects age-appropriate, there are young children on this site, and you wouldn't want them getting introduced to stuff they shouldn't be, if you have something that isn't all-age-appropriate, be sure to give a warning in the project!

-Never steal artwork, as that can be worse than stealing a project, because both can take a very long time to make.

Please put everything above into a real quote with the name data and stuff, thank you.

Re: One Thing for New Users aka Get the Best Advice!

Don't make projects to big, big projects:

A) lag more often

B) take longer to load

C) Might be over 10 megabytes and won't work online

If your project is to big try compressing sounds/images (save before doing because these chnges are irreversible)

Re: One Thing for New Users aka Get the Best Advice!

Good tips deatheater, seems I have forgotten the 10 MB rule >.<
Also to go with that,

If you have a huge song, and you already tried compressing it in the scratch project but it is STILL too large, remove it, or shorten it if possible.

Be sure you test any sounds BEFORE sharing your project, if the volume is too high you may want to remove it, you would not want people going deaf because of your project!

Again, everything in the quote please put into a real quote, thank you.

Re: One Thing for New Users aka Get the Best Advice!

No problem, I don't know about sound being to big after compressing, I had a 3500 kilobyte sound file that after compressed was 400 kilobytes, that's about 3 megabytes cut off and it didn't sound any different

Re: One Thing for New Users aka Get the Best Advice!

Yeah, but there are some huge songs out there, so you never know if someone has a 60 minute long song that could be huge, haven't seen many but even several 400 kilobyte sized songs could eventually fill up your extra space. And sound compression sure is crazy with scratch, most song compressers end up making the sound quality terrible.
Random tip-

Try to keep all projects age-appropriate, there are young children on this site, and you wouldn't want them getting introduced to stuff they shouldn't be, if you have something that isn't all-age-appropriate, be sure to give a warning in the project!

The best advice is to never try to battle aliens!
Of course you knew that already.
My advice is trust no one. They could be aliens in disguise

Really? Aliens? Sweet.
Another really random tip-

If you're going to be downloading projects that have been changed to .exe rather than a scratch project, be sure you have a virus scanner and scan before running the file.

And another...

Never share inappropriate projects, you can have them on your comp, but you can't put them on Scratch.

I wrote the above tip because of an extremely inappropriate pic I saw on scratch, several times.

Information is power, without it you will fail.
Information makes projects.
Research on what other projects do not have.
Graphics appeal to the eye and animations do that doubly so.
Sound effects come last and last only.
Do not do something you cannot do.
The worst sound in the world is someone who cannot play a violin yet insists doing so. If you do something badly, don't put other scratchers through it.
Without thinking, only copying, you will fail.

Is there a way to put that a bit more nicely, like maybe without fail?

It was designed to be sharp. Its the sharp rules to programming and failure is what happens in both real life and the internet if you get something wrong, if it is your fault or not.

Re: One Thing for New Users aka Get the Best Advice!

Well, greenflash didn't want "Fail" in there, so I replaced it...
I know that not following (Some, you don't need to follow all, in my view) will end in failure, but that sounds a bit...Harsh, especially since people typically aim high but end up shooting too high, and missing, people forget the order of importance, etc.
Still,  saying that something "fails", to most people, is an insult, unlike "This and this aren't so good...And you could improve by doing ..." or something like that.

I get your point, as I've been programming for a few years, I was just trying to do what greenflash asked >.<

Fail kind of has a different meaning nowadays, so I suggested it replaced.
