The Scratch file probably did not download completely. Try to download again http://scratch.mit.edu/download (You can skip the form and just click the button).
Check that the downloaded file size is 38 MB on the Mac, 35 MB on Windows.
If that doesn't work, try a different web browser. Besides Internet Explorer, you can try Mozilla Firefox. Or Safari or Opera.
If that doesn't work, please try another computer.
You can also try downloading from this mirror site:

Except every time that I try and get into Scratch It has a screen that says: Select An Image File and it won't let me go into Scratch after I choose one.

Hi cheergrl124,
I'm sorry you're having trouble. Have you tried redownloading the Scratch files? You should have a Scratch.exe and a Scratch.image (as well as other files and folders) in the Scratch folder.
Please let us know if you are still having trouble.
Thanks!

When I try to watch a Scratch movie online I just get a grey box.

sistermaryg: this probably means that you do not have Java installed on your machine. You can see if you have Java here: http://www.javatester.org/enabled.html

I get the same error as cheergirl124 when I try to open Scratch from the "Start" menu. The shortcut on the Desktop works ok.
I have looked into the Scratch folder, and yes, it has both Scratch.exe and Scratch.image.
I have no idea of what the problem might be. For some reason Scratch cannot find the image file when it opens from "Start".

It works when you go into the Scratch folder and select a file called Scratch.image.

Rummy, you've posted on the wrong thread---this one is about "scratch" not starting, not about projects not starting in scratch.
Try posting your request as a *new* post in the Troubleshooting forum.

I downloaded Scratch Installer, but when I try to save files that are needed to run scratch, it says "error opening file for writing". Then it asks if I want to abort, retry (I tried "retry" but I just kept on getting the same message) or ignore the file. I can't just ignore every file. What should I do?

Trouble updating from 1.0.2 to 1.2.1: I can delete the old files, download the "files only", unzip, drag to C:\program files\scratch, but when I go to launch to program it begins to load but after a brief appearance I get the Blue Screen of Death. The relevant-seeming parts of the message are "0x0000008E swmidi.sys, Address A935CE0E base at A9357000, Datestamp 3b7d85fa," and "page fault in a nonpaged area." This is a middle school and I'm the IT person. I've tried updating sound and video drivers (Dell Optiplex GX280). Any help appreciated.

Hi, Catocop.
It's possible that the ZIP file got corrupted in the download process.
As a test, you might try downloading and running the normal Scratch installer and see if that results in a working Scratch.
Other possible problems include:
* hardware problems (especially memory errors)
* some sort of virus
One way to test for those problems would be to try installing Scratch on a different machine. If that works, there may be something wrong with the first machine you tried.
Sorry I can't be more help. Good luck!

Hi, can you explain more? Do you want to get started with Scratch software? Have you downloaded the program to your computer?
Does this new page help at all?

Hi tmaaan, sorry to hear you are having trouble. Have you downloaded the Scratch software on your home computer yet? I see you have a couple of projects uploaded to the website...but those might have been done on somebody else's computer. You need the Scratch software on your computer if you want to be able to open up a downloaded Scratch Project.
If you do have Scratch already...maybe you could tell us what browser program you are using and what operating system you have on your computer? I have heard from some Firefox users that the projects don't open up in Scratch...instead, they have to save the file somewhere (maybe the desktop), then they start Scratch up and use the Open button to locate and open the file.

when I go to install scratch it comes up with this
".3.1.exe" is an executable file. Executable files may contain viruses or other malicious code that could harm your computer. Use caution when opening this file. Are you sure you want to launch "ScratchInstaller1.3.1.exe"?
Is this still safe to use?

Yes, it is safe to run. That warning is a generic warning you get whenever you try and download an executable file.

Shared but cannot view it - it gets stuck in loading even though it is only 5.38 Mb's. You can download the complete movie but cannot watch it & it is never posted on the recently added list either. Tried the Java suggestion and the FireFox instead of Internet explorer as well as 2 other pcs - still does not work. Any suggestions?
Thanks! PG & L

It could also mean that the version you downloaded was/is too updated for your PC. Like if you have an old computer, Scratch 1.4 isn't the best option.
