Wait...Do you have to have Discscratchr to actually play the projects on a different computer?

New DiscScratchr 1.1 alpha released! If you're interested in beta testing or working at the aplication itself, please go to this forum topic...

DiscScratchr allows you to select a number of Scratch projects stored on your computer, and turn them into all files you need to burn a disc.

When you do, this disc will have the following features:
- Automatic Autorun
- Graphical project-selection menu
- Scratch projects open up in Presentation mode
- When you hit ESC or press the grey arrow the project closes and you see the menu again
- Button to explore files on a disc

> > > Download! < < <

No Scratch installation is required to run this disc, so you can take them anywhere. You could use it to...
- Create an archive of your Scratch Projects
- Show Scratch Projects in a classroom
- Share your Scratch projects with friends who don't want to install the Scratch application on their computer.
- etc

This new version is compatible with Scratch 1.3.1 and older but is still in it's very first release. Please, just test and tell me if you can find any bugs. It is not recommended to burn it to discs already .

How to use

Start up  DiscScratchr by opening discscratchr.exe. It is a wizard so it is very easy to use.

When the wizard finishes a bunch of files are created in the "\disc" directory. (can be opened automatically) Use any cd burning program to burn these onto a data cd. When it is inserted into any other pc (with or without Scratch) the disc will AutoRun and show the menu.

System requirements

Windows 95, 98(SE), NT, 2000, ME, XP, 2003, Vista. - Every windows  big_smile

discScratchr is compatible with scratch 1.3.1 and older, but every Scratch version starting from 1.3 is only compatible with Windows XP and newer.

Technical Notes

This version is completely new, none of the files of discScratchr 0.5 are used.

I gave up on those nasty batch scripts, the whole application is created with a free programming language called JustBASIC. It is very easy to learn/use...
The menu is also made with JustBASIC.

For running the scratch projects, I modified the Scratch 1.3.1 source code.

All JustBASIC source files are included in "\resource\source". Feel free to use.

For a discussion about the technical part of discScratchr, see this forum topic
Am I allowed to use the Scratch buttons in the menu?
And the (copyrighted) Scratch cat?

Oops... I forgot the note "Scratch is made by...". I'll add in the next release.

Joren

PS: All posts in this topic up to #56 (shown in the upper right corner) are about discScratchr 0.5 (an old version) and might be outdated.

DOH  Somebody please make a mac version!!!

Nice, cool to see a Scratcher using BASIC. I do too!

I very much enjoy BASIC, but not as much as Scratch.

I'm testing the beta of my programming language-E-ZCode. I made it with Just BASIC.

I'll post a thread when I release it!

So if we have Scratch 1.4 it won't work?  Or will it?  You confused me there.

Hey JSO. Just wondering, do you care if people use this program for profit? It would make it pretty easy to sell Scratch programs!

Re: discScratchr - Scratch discs for your friends, archives,...

Yes I would - not really for personal things but since it is against the licence under which Scratch is distributed.

Scratch and Scratch projects are share-alike, share for free, including the source code.

I wasn't planning on it.  smile  Just curious. I didn't know that about the Scratch license. I will have to take a closer look at it.

Re: discScratchr - Scratch discs for your friends, archives,...

That's odd. I couldn't find anything about it in the Creative Commons License, Policy, Terms of Use, or Copyright Information. Maybe you could show me where it is? Even if it isn't there I still can't use this program without your permission.

Re: discScratchr - Scratch discs for your friends, archives,...

This is the Scratch 1.4 licence.txt:

Scratch

Copyright (c) 2009 Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Scratch is developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab.
See http://scratch.mit.edu

The Scratch logo and the Scratch cat are trademarks of MIT.

Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and accompanying documentation and media files (the "Software") to distribute the Software, including the right to use, copy, publish, or distribute copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:

The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies of the Software.

If the software is published or distributed, the following statement shall be displayed in a visible place on a website or on distribution media such as CDs:

Scratch is developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab.
  See http://scratch.mit.edu

THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE.

And this is the licence under which the Scratch Source code is distributed:

scratch cat icon The Scratch Source Code License

The Scratch source code license allows you to distribute derivative works based on the Scratch source code for non-commercial uses subject to the following restrictions:

   1. you cannot use the word "Scratch" to refer to derivative works (except in the phrase "Based on Scratch from the MIT Media Laboratory"),
   2. you cannot use the Scratch logo or the official (copyrighted) Scratch cat in derivative works,
   3. you cannot implement the ability to upload projects to any MIT Scratch website (currently, http://scratch.mit.edu),
   4. copies or derivative works must retain the Scratch copyright notice and license, and
   5. you must make the source code for derivative works available.

This is just a summary; the full license is in the file "license.txt" included in the source code download package.

The purpose of these restrictions is to avoid confusion in the Scratch user community between the official version of Scratch (supported by the Lifelong Kindergarten group) and experimental variations. We are happy the share our source code, but we want to protect the Scratch brand and our user community.

We hope you will appreciate the reasons for these restrictions.

Alright, seems great since I have a Windows. Try changing "menu.exe" to "menu.app".

Sorry, doesn't quite work like that.

You can't rename a file to make it a different file type.

For example, a .cwk renamed .doc or .docx will still be a ClarisWorks/AppleWorks file, just with the wrong extension.
