Currently the limit is 10 MB. You can reduce the size of a project by going to Extras and compress images and sound.
Also, another possible problem is that the Java browser plugin can run out of memory if the project has many compressed images. The images are expanded when the project is loaded so a 10 MB project could grow to over 100MB in memory. The default Java memory limit varies, but it's usually below 100 MB. You can increase it manually. Unfortunately, it does not seem possible to request a higher memory limit in the embed tag.
The Fall 2007 version of Scratch will automatically compress sounds and images before uploading.

Then you'll have to create your own web site to put it on the web.

What if you have a project that is bigger? You can "cut" the project in to smaller projects to stuff your entire project on the web. Here are blocks to show you:
<when green flag clicked>
<forever>
<if><( <{ project }> <>> 10 MB )>
<set{ projects }to( <{ smaller projects }>
<end>

I hope there will be an option to disable this. (On the current beta, it appears that it is). Some projects rely on specific colors to be present at specific pixel locations and image compression seems to cause problems for these projects.

ok i fixed it. it wasnt the memory, theres a glich in scratch where i told a projuecite which was traviling toward an enemy to come back to the one who fired it, i also gave the thing that was getting hit code to swich costume when hit. it would hit the object, then return to the person without swiching the costume of the thing that was getting hit becuase it runs the return code first thus not running the costume code.
if your confused don't worry, i confused my I.T. teacher as well.

Why must I download some projects online in order to play them? I am worried my game may end up too big and may need to be divided into 9 segments. And, would it be better if I had 10 characters with 10 costumes, or one character with 100 costumes?

The file types accepted are jpeg, png, bmp and gif. The max file size that will be accepted is 90800 bytes. So, if your file type is one of those listed above and the size is under 90 kb, it should go up. If it doesn't...you may have some odd variant of the file type that is causing trouble, try using an image editor to convert it to another one of the accepted file type and try again. Be sure to clear the cache after every attempt. Hope that helps!

Has it been bigger before? My Tunnel Adventures is 11,230 KB. It was uploaded a year ago, though.
I forgot... my Star Wars Sprite collection is 18,246 KB, and that's like a few months ago. Weird...

That's odd. I don't believe that the limit was ever different, though I may be completely wrong.

I was wondering... the game that i'm working on right now is pretty big, and I haven't even uploaded near the 500 minimum backgrounds. I was wondering, if it is over 10 mb when I release it, is it possible to upload the game in steps and than download and save all of the projects and background packs, import all of the projects into the game itself and run it in scratch there? A bit of work, but it could be the best it can do.

just do what i would do, break the project into smaller versions, and post them seperatly, like part one and part two.

Go into your documents and find the folder called "Scratch Projects." You should be able to delete what you want from there.
