I can't drag a GIF into Scratch

I tried dragging a GIF into Scratch but it didn't do anything. I brought it into the Scratch window, but everywhere my cursor went it showed an X.

you have to import it. Don't select "open sprite" to open the image or you will only get 1 frame. You have to select or make a sprite and then select "costumes" select "import" then select the gif image to get all the frames. hope this helped.
