Board Monitors?

I was wondering, can us scratchers send an e-mail to the scratch team and become board monitors or somethin? Cuz on some sites I've been on, members can do just that and get special privilages, like banning people who've said somethin inappropriate and stuff like that.

Re: Board Monitors?

The ScratchR team has selected 3 of us so far as Forum Moderators, but none of us requested it.  I believe that they were looking for people who were frequently on the forums, and who were providing useful advice to others.

I suspect that they will pick more moderators in the future, but probably not for a while.

Re: Board Monitors?

The problem with accepting people's request to become moderator is that, even if the person is a good fit, it would create an avalanche of requests from many people asking to be moderators and then asking why they are not accepted.  This might create unnecessary tension and frustration.

Instead, our current policy is that we ask certain people to become moderators based on their history, reputation and by showing continuous and consistent involvement in the community in line with the values we try to foster (see Terms of Use for an overview).

Re: Board Monitors?

No one is forced to be a moderator, that is why Andres says "we ask certain people …".
I believe that they have asked some people who turned them down, though I'm not sure.

Re: Board Monitors?

I suspect age is also a factor (sorry, younglings  wink  ) as part of the moderation is presumably removing innapropriate content that other scratch users have linked you to.

In effect, a moderator may well be receiving links to innapropriate content and it is a bit iff from a legal standpoint to send such to a minor.

Re: Board Monitors?

One of the moderators is a minor, so I don't think that age is an important part of the decision process.

Re: Board Monitors?

Well, can I be one?
Oops I didn't see that I can't ask.
So, can you keep your eye on my "history, reputation and my showing continuous and consistent involvement in the community in line with the values you try to foster". I hope you're not upset with me using your words.   wink
And I'm not a minor either.

Re: Board Monitors?

I suspect that the ScratchR people are always on the lookout for new moderators, but they want to be sure that people are involved in Scratch for the long term before offering them a position.  It is a lot of work having to read all the messages on the board, and  software to support the moderators is practically non-existent.  A lot of things that would be good for us to do (like splitting threads that are off-topic, or changing the title of a thread) are not possible.

Re: Board Monitors?

I put ScratchR on my name because that's how I call the web application that runs this site. Maybe I should change it to Scratch Team since it's more accurate.
