You probably just don't have the right tools.
This should help you:
Photoplus: basic image editor
picasa: for touchups and subtle effects
Paint.net: A flexible editor
photoscape: like picasa, but with the added bonus of animated GIF creation.
Gimp: the best one I've found so far. Chack it out!
Google Sketchup: For making 3D models & graphics.
