Can't save projects/problem loading Scratch

Hi, this is my first post. I love Scratch, but I am frustrated!!  I have an eMac running OS 10.2.8. I download Scratch OK, and get this funny white icon called MacScratch (it looks like an external device). The program and lots of projects, etc. are in there. It runs fine, but when it comes to saving projects, I can't. It says, "Folder may be locked or write protected". Yes, it is, there's a slash through the pencil in the upper left hand side of the folder. It also will not let me save projects anywhere else. I am stuck.  So, how do I remove the protection? Or what do I have to do to get this on my computer for good so that I can use it. Help me please! Too bad fairy dust doesn't fix it.

Re: Can't save projects/problem loading Scratch

That post was helpful. I went to get info and found out that the read/write is in grey. I can't get it to go to black. The MacScratch volume seems to be locked in some way that I can't unlokc. Could I have downloaded it wrong? Should I be able to save projects to a different folder?
I know that this is just a hitch....
What should happen when I download the program?
I'm trying to figure out how to ask this question so that I can get an answer that works.
Sorry to be a pest!

Re: Can't save projects/problem loading Scratch

I'm sorry, but I haven't used a Mac in years.  Maybe some Mac folks on the Forum can address this specific problem.  Is there an administrator account on the machine that would have the ability to change permissions on the folder?  Do you have the option to save in other locations like the Desktop?  On my PC, the default location to save is under the Scratch folder but I have the option to save on other areas of the disk, such as the Desktop.

If you don't get an answer soon, try reposting with a subject line something like "Help! Mac Folder Permissions Problem...maybe the right people will see it."

Re: Can't save projects/problem loading Scratch

The scratch folders in the Mac distribution come with write permission turned off.  It is possible to turn them all on (I found it much easier to do from a terminal window, using the Unix "chmod" command than using the Mac graphical interface), but a simpler solution that turns out to be better is to keep all your projects in your own folders (under Documents).  That way when you upgrade to a new version of Scratch, you can get rid of the old Scratch folders without losing any of your own work.  I have switched over to doing this myself, after having to move everything for the v1.2.1 release.
