Copys.......

I have noticed that lately, people are  great taking projects such as kuri's NINJA STICK PERSON and dowloading them, and re-uploading them and taking credit for the but not changing a thing. NOT EVEN THE NAME! I have no problem with downloading and changing projects and making them your own. But not changing them is where I have a problem.

I think there should be a choice on who can download projects, like who can add a project to a gallery,or, there could be a system on the site denying any projects that are the excact same. What do you think?  Post your opinions here.

Re: Copys.......

Just don't pay attention to them, or add a comment or tag saying "copied"

Re: Copys.......

How would you feel if a project you had worked on for two months and was really good and was then downloaded and copied by someone who took all the credit!

Re: Copys.......

Well that's what the "Share!" button is for. You SHARE your work in the community.
If you don't want anybody to copy it then just don't upload it.

As for me, I would be honoured if somebody copies me, because when a person copies a project, that means the person thinks the project is great. So copying a project is basicly adding it to your favorites list.

Well, don't worry about it, the Zara siggy will be back soon, new and improved! ^^ Meanwhile, just do what the sig tells you to. >.>

Re: Copys.......

if you are looking at a copied project, there is a note below the project that says based on [insert name here]'s project with a link to the original project

Re: Copys.......

it does get kind of annoying, but MyRedNeptune has a point. It must have been really good for that person to want to copy it!

you could also report it. if enough people report a project, it will be taken off the site.

I know he/she has a point, but that is what upsets me, people copying really good projects.

I do not encourage flagging copied projects. Who knows who the person who copied is? Maybe it's just a little child who doesn't understand anything yet?

For example, I nearly uploaded a project taken off Scratch when I was experimenting what the "Share!" button does.

Re: Copys.......

I like to think that good ideas are free, and that people are willing to help each other out by sharing.

Sometimes people copy projects when they planning on remixing them or when playing around with Scratch.  No matter what, its always honorable to personally mention who worked on the project before you and show respect for what they did.

Jman, I like your idea.

I help the Scratch team, and know they considered this.  But they were concerned that it would be too easy to get around by making even the smallest changes.

Heres a quesion I have...when is it okay to copy what other people do, and when isn't it?

So you would be happy if someone rips off your projects, say its their's, and make a profit off of it. That's plagiarism.  neutral

Re: Copys.......

Bluekingice, plagiarism has nothing to do with profit (you're thinking of copyright violation, patent infringement, or some other form of intellectual property theft).  Plagiarism is an academic sin, and it refers to copying without attribution.  As long as you give proper credit to the original author, it isn't plagiarism (though copying may still violate copyrights or other intellectual property rights).

What MyRedNeptune was saying is that pressing the "Share!" button gives people the right to re-use and modify your code.  If you don't want that to happen, don't share your programs on the MIT web site.
