Can't import costume

Tried to import a few of the Casey Dancing costumes to a sprite and though I went through all the steps for importing the costumes, the new costumes did not show up. Any suggestions?

thanks

Re: Can't import costume

I am having same problem.... I create a sprite/costume on my pc and then export it to a removable drive.    I then give the drive to my son who puts it in the usb drive and  hits import (either in custom or in sprite or in paint)  and the program can not see the custom/sprite.  I know the sprite/custom is on the disk because I can open windows explorer and see it.

Making it worse, it seems to be intermittent...some times it
looks see it sometimes not.

Re: Can't import costume

I've never had much luck with the Import/Export Sprite feature.  I usually use the Import Project and just pull the whole thing in and throw away what I don't need.  Sometimes I'll make a special stripped-down version of the project and do a Save As, then import that.

Re: Can't import costume

That's interesting. My computer at my house works just fine; actually I barely have any problems at all with it! But at my school, The kids at my club do have trouble importing costumes and saving to Scratch. They have the 1.2 version, I have 1.2.1. What do you have?

Re: Can't import costume

Hi dudeDad,

Could you please tell us if are you exporting the sprite as image file (gif, bmp, png, jpeg) or as a Scratch sprite file (*.sprite) ?

hchafiian: Did you check if the graphics files are in fact in a format that Scratch can read (gif, bmp - uncompressed, png, jpg)? If not, you might want to try converting them to such a file format first.

Re: Can't import costume

We are having problems in my class with "importing" certain costumes & backgrounds. I'm not talking about the "adding something new into Scratch" kind of importing, but rather "importing"  as it is used in Scratch - changing the costume of a sprite to one available in the Media collection. We go through the steps to add/change a background or costume, and some will work while others will not. When I check in the actual Media file in the Scratch folder, the gif is there, but it won't appear when we select it to be used. And it is not the same costumes or backgrounds that fail to work on all the computers in my lab - different computers have problems with different costumes and backgrounds.

I hope this description makes sense! I would appreciate any help you could share.

Re: Can't import costume

I am having the same problem in my technology class, only it seems to be the backgrounds that are gif files. I don't have any trouble with the images myself, but my students do (different computer privileges). If I convert the gif file to a jpeg, it will work for the students. It is quite a hassle, however.

Re: Can't import costume

I came across this once. I never import/export sprites FYI. Anyways, I realized I have to make it a brand new sprite in order for it to work (again, I never import/export)

Re: Can't import costume

I have a problem importing costumes to the stage. Some costumes import without a problem, while others won't. I will appreciate your help with this issue.

I'm having exactly this problem in the CS class I teach - works fine for me, but not for students with their login. I hadn't noticed the .GIF issue, but I just now checked and found that the ones that didn't import were in fact .GIFs. My machines are running 1.2.1 on XP. I'm trying to import from the standard costumes that come with the Scratch installation.

So... lots of us talking about the problem; is there anyone out there who has come across the solution (other than converting the gifs to another format)? I'd love to be able to fix this without having to bang my head against a wall for too long.

Re: Can't import costume

Hi -- can you try this workaround -- open the Image Editor (by clicking Paint) and then click "Import" from inside the image editor. Does that work?

Re: Can't import costume

Hi, all.

Is it correct that all of these costume importing issues occur in networked Windows installations? This is a puzzling problem since (a) I cannot reproduce it in a standalone Scratch and (b) it seems to be intermittent, at least for some people. If anyone sees a pattern that might give us a clue, please chime in.

Meanwhile, it would be great to find a reliable workaround. You can try Natalie's idea; that worked for one teacher who was having problems.

Another idea is to try drag-and-drop -- open the Scratch Media folder in Windows Explorer, find the image you want, and drop it onto the Scratch window.

One final thing to try: copy the image file to your desktop, then import it into Scratch from there. (You can use the "Desktop" shortcut button in the costume import dialog to quickly get to the desktop.)

If you find a workaround that works reliably, please share your solution here. Thanks!

Re: Can't import costume

i try all of that and it still didn't work.
my files is a animated .gif file about 68.3 mb, i clicked on the create a new sprite and then on import, the import costumes window came and where my gif image what suppose to be instead it was blank. then i made a different animated .gif about 2.72 mb but it didn't show either, the other animated .gif show perfectly. I think it's the software: VirtualDub-1.9.10
