New to Scratch? I have been using Scratch for about a little over a year now, and I will be pleased to help all new comers!
Here are some things that might be helpful to you when you first start Scratch:
What is a sprite?
- A sprite is an object that you are able to program. You can draw your own sprite, or choose one from file.
What is a block?
- A block is the basic element of Scratch programing. You can drag and drop blocks under another one, or drag a block in the middle of a stack of blocks.
What is a script?
- A script is a group of blocks that are all connected.
How do I make my scripts "work"?
- To make one of your scripts work, double click on it. To make all of your scripts work at once, go to the "control" section found in the top left corner, and drag out the block "when green flag clicked" block (the first block in the pile). Drag and drop that at the top of your script. Now, look at the green flag located in the top right corner. Click on that. Now, all of you're scripts will work.
Can I have more than one sprite or script?
- Of course you can! There are 3 ways to create a new Sprite:
At the middle right of the screen, there will be 3 buttons
1) The first one will have a little paint brush on it, click on that button to draw your own sprite.
2) The second button will have a folder on it. Click on this button to shose a sprite from the Scratch folder.
3) The third button will give you a surprise sprite.
I hope that this information will help all new comers. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! If you found any mistakes in the topic, feel free to mention!
Thank you and,
SCRATCH ON!

do you go to MIT?

Actually, no. I really do want to go to MIT when I am older, and I also LOVE to Scratch. So really, I hope people don't get the false impression. The user name is really just the inspiration!

MIT,
This is a nice idea for a forum post, and some great pointers for those just getting started. I always point people to MrShah's pattern maker project, so I'd like to suggest it:
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/MrShah/29484
Of course, there are lots of great projects to get inspired by, but I especially like MrShah's because; This is a cool project, it shows the "code", does something pretty neat visually, and is easy to modify and build on.
When I first visited the Scratch site (and didn't know what to expect), I happened upon Pattern Maker and started to see the possibilities of Scratch. I'm pretty amazed by how much can be done with Scratch and have had a lot of fun creating things with it, and will always remember downloading and "fiddling with" Pattern Maker when I was a "new Scratcher".

this is great for new scratchers, but i didn't figure out what forums were until about a month after i came here. by then i knew the basic things about scratch.
I also hope that it will help new Scratchers too! I'm always trying to help. Do you think that there is anything more that I should add or modify to the list?

It's not nice to hijack someone else's thread. Your thread is already pretty popular so give other people a chance to answer some questions.

Take it easy people. Heybrian just posted a link to his or hers forum thread. Always try to assume other people have good intentions and you will find less things insulting. There are enough questions to be answered for everyone.
