Greetings Everyone!
Some of you may have noticed that the images in your signatures now appear smaller than they used to. We did this because we felt that threads with many large signatures can become difficult to read. We've placed a trial limit of 150 pixels on the height of images used in signatures, so images larger than that will be automatically shrunken in most browsers.

While we think there should be a limit on the size of signature images, we are interested in hearing feedback from members of the community on what that limit should be. Here are a few example images showing different image sizes:

What do you think would be the best size limit for signatures?

Well... Since I don't use images a lot, I's say 150 pixels for 1 and 75 for more than 1, if you can do that.

Yes! Was waiting for this to be put in place, annoying having to scroll down just to see some stupid picture. I would say keep it with other forums which is 150px. It's a decent height and anything more i think looks bad.

Most forums usually set rules for signature image dimensions being around 100 pixels to 150 pixels high. I think a reasonable size would be 100, 110, or 120 pixels.

150. (Mine are never larger than 120, but others might want it taller.)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, everyone!

A couple of points:
* It's interesting that most forums limit things to between 100 - 150. I think it's often true that we can benefit from the experiences and choices of other online communities. This feels like a good argument for choosing a limit within that range.

* Some Scratchers above have pointed out that there could be more than one image. I think the limit we choose should apply to however many images the Scratcher puts in their sig. So if we end up choosing a limit of 150, that means 2 images 75 pixels tall is ok, or 3 50 pixel images, ...or 75 2 pixel images tongue

If someone makes a sig that is greater than the limit, we'll contact them and ask them to shrink it.

If anyone has more thoughts about size limits, please feel free to share them. It's most helpful to submit both a number and an explanation as to why you think this number is the best one to choose. Thanks everyone! smile

What I see often on other forums is that if a signature is to big, a moderator will change the persons signature to something like this:

Your signature is not allowed on these forums because it was too big, or was inappropiate. Please change your signature to something more suitable to the forums and read the rules.

This is basically telling the user that they can't use that signature because it isn't going by the rules, but it still shows what was in the signature in the code boxes.

I think that 200 is too small. Even with that you would barely be able to see the Scratch Olympics team banners!

You can make smaller Scratch Olympics banners or cut them to pieces... But yes, this limit should be about 100-120 pixels, disregarding quantity of images in the signature.

When I average all the suggestions in this thread (including mine, which is for 100), the number comes out around 150. Based on this and the reasons given above, I think it makes sense to stick with what we already have implemented.

So the height limit for signatures will be 150 pixels total.

Mozaz - thanks for the suggestion. We'll probably do something similar to what you recommend when Scratchers have signatures that are too big.

Generally, we try to do things the nice way. smile
After a conversation with the other mods, we decided we would send notifications to Scratchers with sigs over 150 pixels tall and ask them to shrink them a bit.
