It'd be so cool if there was either an app or program for the itouch and iphone. I really don't think this is possible but if there was a scratch app I'd definitely buy it. Anyone else like this idea also?

It's a great idea, but until the iPod touch has Java, it will never work. First things first, the processing power of hand held devices aren't usually up to this kind of stuff. Think about a large sized project on Scratch. It is slow enough. Imagine that times 10. Not pretty. Also, how would you be able to tell if your "mouse" (a.k.a. finger) is hovering (<touching[ mouse pointer) or clicking (<mouse down?>) ?
Not that I wouldn't want to see this, but right now, I don't think it is possible.

This is similar to the suggestion for the Wii, and I have the same answer for you. No. People are right; until the Wii or an itouch or iphone can get Java, it's not possible. And anyway, it doesn't fit. Scratch just wouldn't work for the Wii or an itouch or iphone.

ok, Jonathanpb, you are destroying others people dreams and discouraging them. If you have nothing good to say, then don't post it.
Anyways, They could create a special iPhone version of Scratch called iScratch. The blocks would be designed for the iPodTouch and iPhone, I have a few examples.
[sprite name] tapped (Hat block)
finger down? (instead of mouse down)

I would totally agree with this idea! I thought of it, but I thought it would be hard to make because the can't use Java to upload projects. Java uses mouse tracking and the iTouch and iPhone don't. It would still very cool.

I see what you are saying. But if this were to happen, iScratch would be completely unrelated to the current Scratch. But first, we need Java and more powerful mobile devices before we could ever do that.

Yup just need stupid java to work on it

Ok, java is just for the web player, the iScratch would have a Project Browser insteasd of getting them from the web browser., the normal scrath projects wouldn't wor, also, you would need a different file extensions, maybe .isb

Keikij, he's not destroying dreams and all that other stuff. He's just pointing it out, because people often don't notice that it needs Java.
He's not being negative, he's being honest.
But it's good of you to try and stop negative posts, but try and find the more negative ones.

Ok, let me get this straight. You think I'm destroying other people's dreams? I'm saying the truth: until they have Java, they won't be able to get Scratch. And think about it... besides the fact that Scratch fits for the computer, what about blocks like <mouse down>? It wouldn't work.
I am sorry if you think that I am discouraging. I'm just saying my opinion, and I don't intend to be mean.

...not true, Scratch itself is written in Squeak, and it would in theory be possible to port over the source to the iPhone. Indeed, you can run Scratch on an iPhone using the Objective-C Squeak VM port that exists today, if you're prepared to put a bit of effort into it.

I Love It! But You Can Jailbreak Your Ipod/itouch!! :p

Is anyone talking here an ACTUAL APPLE DEVELOPER????? Well I am and I think that it could work. The iphone would of course need Java. But the application part is DEFINITELY possible. The iPhone IS MUCH MORE POWERFUL than you actually think it is!!! It would need to be rewrote in Objective-C or use the Objective-C Squeak VM port that lxt pointed out. It would take A LOT of work to get it on the iPhone.

Anyways, some ipod versions have the internet access. I think that it would be extremely hard to create an Iscratch. Ipod might not agree to Scratch terms, or would not like to have a copy of their technology. Both parties have to agree, but at this point I think Scratch will probably stick to the computer. Anyhow any way you do it. You need internet access. Whether it's uploading projects or looking at projects, it still requires internet.

You mean you have a mac and bought the program that is used to design applications? Believe me, the iPod touch does not have the kind of power for that kind of thing.

I have a Mac and have bought the program for $99 and yes the iPod Touch does have the power to run it. Maybe not HUGE programs but smaller ones. There are some PRETTY HUGE applications on the app store. You think that Scratch would be hard for it to run. Think about a 3d game having to render the 3d objects CONSTANTLY!!

Right, but I can play games like Toontown on my computer without any lag whatsoever, while Scratch is slower than a tortoise in a race. And I was wrong saying it was power, it's speed (and power too). Think about it! Every time you put a new block into Scratch in a script, it completely reloads the image. That is what makes it so slow! I'm pretty sure it makes the code in squeak before the project even starts. Like I said, it COULD work, but some people just aren't patient enough to wait for that kind of stuff.

Sorry, but isn't that kinda overreacting? We need opinions from both sides here.
