Lately the bottom three list of the Scratch front page is covered
with picture things like drawings of cats , anthros and , tokis.
It seems like the same users and the same things are appearing
over and over again.
Me , and some of my friends have come up with a solution to
the lack of diversity on the front page.
When you share a project , you have to catagorize it.
On Youtube , videos are catagorized and tagged. This will introduce
a new way to organizing Scratch projects.
Catagorize while your about to share your project.
The front page will look something like this..
As you can see it is catagorized. Instead of three Top
loved/viewed as it always has , it would show the first top
__________ project for each catagory. The list would display
a random catagory every time the page is loaded.
When the ''see more'' button is clicked , it would display the
top __________ projects from the other categorys. The
top loved ''Cat'' or ''Anthro'' projects would probaly show
up as top loved Animation or Art.
The only problem I found with the system is how do we
catagorize the 475,000 projects already uploaded? Maybe
the scratch team could send out a message to all users
to catagorize their projects.
Post a reply and tell me what you think.

great just how do we do it

Not really. Maybe just categorize it like this:
Games&Simulations
Animations&Drawings
Announcements&ScratchLog
FanArt&AnythingElse
And there would be a selection box... I made a mockup in Firebug:

You forgot to add 'music' in there as a category; I'd hate to have music-themed projects mashed up with fan art.

Andres says he will do it when he has time!

Nice idea!
One problem: It could be abused. if, say, the number of projects in 'simulations' is significantly less than 'animations,' than someone could put an animation under simulations, to increase the chance of getting on the front page. Quite frankly, I liked the old system. Here's what I like about it:
o The top downloaded section always contained quality projects. Why? because the downloaded ones were ones which people wanted to see how it was done, usually employing a unique and useful technique.
o It does not contain the below drawbacks.
And what I dislike about the new one:
o Most of the 'top remixed' section are just 'chain projects.' Most often, these are just images, with maybe a bit of code to change them. The front page should showcase projects which show a degree of programming skill, and that other scratchers can learn from, on that front.
o The scratch curator section is rather general. As it shows all favorite projects of the curator. And we all have different tastes. So what appeals to the curator may not appeal to the general scratch population. It also can be biased; towards whatever the curator chooses. Not only this, but it also has the potential to be abused. All the curator has to do, is create another account, upload whatever they like, and boom, it's on the front page!
o The scratch design studio is a nice way to inspire scratchers to create projects based on new things. But, do we really need a front page row for it? There are no filters on the quality of the projects, just that some guy puts them in that gallery. In fact, someone could put just about anything on there, and it would show up on the front page until a moderator removes it. But honestly, I doubt that the moderator has time to look through them all.
o And finally, the main page is getting rather crowded. It only takes a second or two for me, but I feel sorry for those who are trying to view it on dial-up (blah) using internet explorer (blahier) using a 16 bit, pre-millennium operating system (blahiest).
