Hi, I just got 1.4 and the camera function is not working all that well i.e. I just get static. We do have a webcam, installed into the screen of our computer, but Scratch doesn't seem to pick it up and just goes on like there's no webcam. Help! Please! >

I'm using a HP Media Center, running Windows XP. Camera works perfectly out of Scratch. Do I have to set a default camera or something?

Another camera problem. I have an external USB web camera (Logitech) which works ok with Skype, but which just provides a solid black image when I try using it from Scratch.
I'm running Mac OS 10.5.7 on a 1.8GHz G5 iMac with 512MB of ram.

Using the built-in camera on an Apple Macbook Pro, I got a pop-up "division by zero" and odd text message window when trying to take a picture from the Scratch option. Then I realized I had Photoboth open, too. Closing that let me see the camera image through Scratch. But, now the project just shows that error window when I click on the costumes tab. The error follows along when exporting the sprite, then importing to a new project.

I've confirmed the bug in the camera feature that Karen R. reported. (Thanks for the clear bug report, Karen!)
If you see a black screen in the camera preview dialog, DO NOT click on the camera icon to take a photo. This will add a bad costume to the current sprite or stage, causing the error mentioned by Karen. If you get a black preview screen, just click on the "Done" button to exit without taking a photo.
If you get this error, DO NOT save the sprite or the project. If you do, the sprite will keep giving an error when you try to select it's costume's tab. Quit Scratch without saving your project and start over, or delete the sprite with the bad costume.
There are also a few other camera issues.
* Some cameras may not be compatible with Scratch. If you see "static" instead of a clear image, please report it here and mention what OS you are running and the maker and model number of your camera.
* If you see a black camera preview screen, it could be because another application (e.g. PhotoBooth on a Mac) is using the camera. Click the "Done" button to close the camera preview, then close the other application that is using the camera and try again.
* Another possible cause for a black camera preview screen could be that the appropriate drivers for your camera are not installed. See if you can open the camera with some third-party application (e.g. make a video call with Skype). If the camera works with other applications but not Scratch, please report it here and mention what OS you are running and the maker and model number of your camera.

I have a problem with the camera feature as well. When I try and use it in scratch it just shows up with a blue screen, so I think scratch is trying to use a camera on my computer that isn't working. I do have a web-cam that I use for Skype calls and it works perfectly but scratch does not let you select the default camera device. Being able to to do that is a feature that Scratch really needs to have.

Here's a hint for developer types. My camera Button works fine, it just uses th wrong Device!
I have a TV tuner in whatever HP calls that slot on the side of my Pavilion Laptop (DV9700t)--Expresscard slot? Something like that.
Anyway, the camera button brings up a window with whatever's on TV right now and I can take snapshots from it. My perfectly good built-in WebCam is ignored.
Windows Vista Ultimate x64.

Well, it works just fine for me. And I have 1.4 too. How many Scratchers have this problem?

What are you trying to do with it? If you want a screenshot of the stage, then theres the "save picture of stage..." button. If you want to take a screenshot of the programming, then theres the "save picture of scripts" button.
