Hmm. The Picocricket site suggests that you should let vista pick its own, so I'm surprised that it's not selecting something:

Can a Moderator move this post to the sensor board forum? Perhaps someone who reads that forum will have some ideas.

Hi ebot.
It's odd that you are experiencing this issue....
I do have a vista driver installer that may be of use to you. The only thing I would check on before that is if you are using a 64 bit version of Vista, as there is no supported 64bit driver for Vista that I am aware of.
If you would like the Vista driver installer I have, please send me an email from an account that can accept a 2mb attachment, and I will be happy to forward it to you.

I know that this forum is kind of dead, but I have a similar problem; My Vista can't find the driver when I follow the online instructions. Could you e-mail me your vista installer? [email edited out by forum moderator JSO] thanks!

oooo, you don't need an installer for windows Vista. Vista detects it automatically when you plug it into an USB port.
Scratch does not always detects the sensor board immediately, put one of the blocks into a forever block, after a few seconds the sensor board will be activated.

This is all true. There is at least one instance where one may actually need the Vista driver- If you are using a computer that has a custom build of Vista where the driver had been removed. This is usually in institutions where they deploy an image of all their softwares to many computers......so..... If you are at home on a standard computer then it should just work, unless, as mentioned before in this thread, it's a 64bit version of Windows.
For anybody who is in the situation where they need the drivers, try googling "PL2303 Vista Drivers" you'll find the drivers on a few websites of people who sell them. The PL2303 is the Serial to USB cable included with the PicoBoard.

So, wait a minute, you're saying that the Picoboard will not work in any way on a 64-bit Vista?

As far as I know there haven't been any...... But after doing a goolge search for "PL2303 64 bit" it appears some drivers have popped up. I can't guarantee anything, but it appears there may be hope. Let us know how it goes.

I tried installing the driver on my 64-bit Vista. It said something like "For Windows 98 to XP only!" Then I tried deleting the folder. First it said it needed my administrator privlilages to continue. I said yes. Then it said something like "If you want this file to run, hit continue." I hit cancel. I tried deleting it again, and it deleted without hassle. What do you think this means? Could there be a virus?

I hope not, but it could be. It's very wise to scan anything you download off the internet before launching it, particularly .exe files. Vista has a fairly picky security system when dealing with installations, so the odd behavior could be a result of that as well.
I wish I could offer you more specific help, but I don't have any guaranteed solutions, as there has never been 64bit support for that cable.
Another, perhaps safer option, is to get a different cable- one that has 64bit drivers. The one that comes with the PicoBoard is the Prolific PL2303, and has always been (until recently??) only 32bit. I know keyspan make a decent one, it's just a bit on the expensive side.

I just spent 2 hours installing the pico board on a mac and a windows computer. I thought I'd write down what I did to save others the trouble.
1. Mac (leopard)
basically installed immediately with no problem
I simply followed the instructions here
http://www.picocricket.com/picoboardsetup.html
2. Windows Vista
a) start with the instructions here http://www.picocricket.com/picoboardsetup.html
b) Although others on this thread did not have a problem, our vista computer would never find the drive, online or offline.
c) this thread suggests checking if the computer is 64bit.
To check,
click start menu -- choose computer by right clicking right click -- choose properties.
Ours is 32bit
d) google for PL2303 drivers. Turns out the PL2303 driver for picoboard is simply a USB to serial port driver.
e) found references to drivers from Prolific and ATEN. download Prolific driver from Prolific site
It is described on this page
http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31
********************************************
THE DOWNLOAD LINK IS THIS URL
http://www.prolific.com.tw/support/files/%5CIO%20Cable%5CPL-2303%5CDrivers%20-%20Generic%5CWindows%5Callinone%5CPL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_10311.zip
**********************************************
f) Both Prolific and ATEN appear to be legitimate companies providing drivers for cables they sell. I was unable to find a PL2303 driver download on ATEN
g) I proceeded to install the Prolific driver on Vista. At first I had trouble because it kept saying do you want to uninstall? Since I had not installed it, I kept saying no. Finally, after I said uninstall, I was able to install it.
h) open up scratch. enable sensors.
i) right click on the sensor monitors on the stage. Very important -- choose COMM 3.
everything worked now.
good luck

If you plug the parallel port on the board into the one on your computer, it shouldn't need a driver. of course for this you'll need to find a parallel port cable... not too common in this serial age.
