I'm teaching Scratch to a bunch of gifted 2-6th graders this week and one of them is making a dungeon crawl type of game and would like to know if he could add what I'd call a torch effect. That is, the user can only see the maze within a specific radius from the character. Is something like that possible in Scratch. I've looked around the different tags and couldn't find anything that looked like it could but I'm hoping I'm missing something.

well something that goes to the mouse pointer could help. Look at this project.

In this project get the flashlight (in the closet) and then click the side of the bed (goes under the bed) Mouse over the pocket and click the light. The items appear under the bed when you mouse over the items. You could change the light circle to a ghost effected torch. Hope this helps...

You know, it's possible to make sprites bigger than the scratch stage. You just choose the 'grab screen region for new sprite' option on a right-clicked stage. Then, 'select' the whole scratch IDE. Just edit it, paint the whole thing black, and make a transparent whole in the middle. now, 'set rotation centre' to the middle of the whole, and have this big sprite follow the sprite to be torched. Hope this helps, cheers!
