What are Templates?

I have heard a lot about templates on Scratch and would like to know what they are.

Re: What are Templates?

A "Template" is, basically, a programming term that refers-to a Website or Game's Design, if you know what I mean.  wink

Re: What are Templates?

Did you try looking at a dictionary, or even dictionary.com?

PS: Template is not really a programming term, look it up yourself

Oh, you're right—my dictionary actually says:

Dictionary
template |ˈtemplət|
noun
1 a shaped piece of metal, wood, card, plastic, or other material used as a pattern for processes such as painting, cutting out, shaping, or drilling.
• figurative something that serves as a model for others to copy : the plant was to serve as the template for change throughout the company.
• Computing a preset format for a document or file, used so that the format does not have to be recreated each time it is used : a memo template.
• Computing a guide that fits over all or part of a computer keyboard to describe the functions of each key for a particular software application.
• Biochemistry a nucleic acid molecule that acts as a pattern for the sequence of assembly of a protein, nucleic acid, or other large molecule.
2 a timber or plate used to distribute the weight in a wall or under a support.
ORIGIN late 17th cent.(as templet): probably from temple 3 + -et 1 . The change in the ending in the 19th cent. was due to association with plate .

Re: What are Templates?

When people refer to templates on Scratch, they usually are talking about a "base" costume. They use the template by drawing inside it or filling the gaps, etc..
If you're confused, picture a circle costume. Now picture someone making other costumes by copying the circle and filling it up with graphics.

I'm sorry I can't describe this too well... I just can't find the right words!

I fall: It's a tragedy. You fall: It's comedy.
Hmph enjoy your fall - I get a lovely spring... without pans of new leaves.
