A good MIDI composer

I'm not sure if this actually belongs here, but here goes.

I want to have a MIDI composer, that can play sounds that sound similar to the NES sounds. (8bit/16bit sounds) Any ideas where I could find a composer that does this for me?

Re: A good MIDI composer

I know a couple of VSTis that have 8bit/16bit sounds.

Re: A good MIDI composer

If you want sounds exactly like the NES's, you can try FamiTracker.

If you want just something that reminds you of 8-bit sound systems, look into some VSTis (like the ones cuddlycub talks about) and use them in a DAW like FL Studio.

Re: A good MIDI composer

For a MIDI program, there really isn't anything free better than Anvil Studio

Then, get BASSMIDI, so you can use Soundfont files as your default MIDI synth.

Then, finally, find any soundfont you like the sound of, and set it in BASSMIDI.  This looks like a good place to find a soundfont like what you want.  smile

Woah, I didn't know they recently released a new version  yikes  I thought that was an ancient program. I know about it because Bobby Prince (the guy who wrote the soundtracks to DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D) recommends it. xD

Yea, its been around for a long time, and the UI is a bit dated-looking, but it is regularly updated.

Re: A good MIDI composer

I got FamiTracker, and I'm figuring out how to use it now. I've already made a very long 'BEEEP' noise in it  tongue

Re: A good MIDI composer

Read some tutorials (and the whole wiki, to learn about effects and how the NES sound chip works) and download some .FTM files to see how they were created. c:

There's also the examples in the folder which I'm learning from.

This is harder than I thought. xP

Re: A good MIDI composer

Think about it: you are programming a virtual sound card (the effects etc.) rather than just writing music. It might help to write down your ideas in an actual MIDI composing program. c:
