What is an adopt on Scratch?

I know this question may sound sorta noob (which I am) BUT... what is an adoptable? I often see where people will post stuff labeled "adopt" whether people can adopt the animals or they show one of their adopts. I kinda got the idea of what an adopt is by looking at the projects, but not completely. What is an adopt and how does it work?

Basically, the person who draws the animal first "adopts" it.

I'm not sure myself, but somebody draws an animal or somethin and other people "adopt" the drawing.
