PAC (proxy automatic configuration) support

Hi,

There are a few teachers at our school district that are using Scratch, and they would like to be able upload programs. However, we use proxy servers and a PAC file to send them to the right proxy server. I'm aware you can specify a server and port (http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Network_Installation), but the proxy changes depending on location, load, and maintenance schedules. Is there any support for a PAC file, or is this support planned?

Thanks,
-Dan

Re: PAC (proxy automatic configuration) support

Not sure if this is possible without modifying Scratch (1.4), but Scratch 2.0 is made in Flash and runs in the web browser, so you shouldn't need to set up proxy servers. Scratch 2.0 is in beta testing, so only people who have made a Scratch account before January 26 can login to the 2.0 website. http://beta.scratch.mit.edu

Re: PAC (proxy automatic configuration) support

As nathanprocks said, I don't think this is possible with scratch 1.4... Could you setup another lightweight(squid?) proxy which just forwards requests to the proxy specified in the PAC file?

Re: PAC (proxy automatic configuration) support

I can't log in to scratch 2.0 because I created my account before a certain date.
Will I be able to log on on may 9th the day it opens? Thanks,

Re: PAC (proxy automatic configuration) support

I haven't been able to test Scratch 2.0 so I'm waiting for the release date, too. I know some flash-based apps don't like to talk through a proxy server when run on the Mac, though it works fine with Windows, so that's something we'll need to test.

TRocket: We could even hard-code the client to a proxy server, but this isn't optimal since the application would break if we took that particular proxy offline, and it may result in inefficient routing (traffic going to a remote site before going to the Internet). There are also multiple proxy servers listed for different types of traffic or sites.

Thanks,
-Dan
