The reason they arn't doing it is because it will might invade privacy, but my solution is that you can choose if you're hidden or open. If open they it will say if you're online or offline or hidden means nothing will show. (Default is hidden.)

I personally like this idea 
I also like Magnie's idea. I remember on an an online game I used to play called Runescape, there was a guy that was called Zezima, and he was so popular because he was the best player in history. If you were to even LOOK at his private chat it would be going super fast.
