At the tri-county government-funded animal shelter here, they aren't allowed to adopt out pitbulls and boxers and stuff because gov't restrictions! :' (
The shelter I volunteer at gets some (lots) dogs of those "unadoptable" breeds and sees if they're friendly enough. If they are, the tri-county one lets us house them until they find a home, because they aren't all bad dogs!
Some neighborhoods here also don't allow you to have a pitbull live with you! So many of the ones I work with are very sweet and unviolent! ):
