Your favorite game doesn't necessarily mean that it's the best game. You haven't played every game and can't see the game through all different view points. One person might think that Doom is the best video game because it was extremely influential, one of the first of it's kind, had stunning graphics for the time, had well-crafted levels and ideas, etc. Another person might not like Doom because it's too scary for them, they don't like first person shooters, or any other reason. They wouldn't put it on their list of favorite games, but they could, at least, acknowledge that it is a great game, it just isn't their cup of tea.

Someone may say Pokemon gold is the best, but that would be in their opinion as by graphics and mechanics, black and white 2 would be the best STATISTICALLY.

If by best you mean most advanced. "Best" is a bit of a difficult word.

I think "best" would mean by influence.
In that case, Red is the best Pokemon game.
Or Half-Life would be influencing the first person shooter genre.
