Kid A is actually probably Radiohead's second most popular album, so I wouldn't say people hate it. I'm amongst the minority for sure, especially because I really like Amnesiac (its sister album).

I would call it pretty tame for alternative rock, and have no idea what it would be "progressing" toward, other than "slightly more alternative rock"
Maybe it was super freaky and strange and different when it came out (it wasn't) but as it stands now I wouldn't call it anything but alternative
