So, what's your opinion on people banning books from libraries. In my opinion I think it's stupid. For example, I heard that the Captain Underpants books were banned from libraries because it had fart jokes in it. So... yeah, what do you think?

Captain Underpants, ah memories.
But yeah banning certain books is stupid unless it has a valid and justifiable reason.
I can't think of anything specific off the top of my head but I know that there are some books like that.

We had to do a project about them once I think. http://www.ala.org/advocacy/banned is a website with information, and Fahrenheit 451 focuses on them.
I never really had it affect me though.

The Dragon Ball manga was banned from a public school library in Maryland because some 9-year-old read it and complained about some of the innuendo.
Doesn't seem that outrageous, until it was removed from the high school libraries as well.

Fahrenheit 451 is about the banning of books, but honestly it's not just banning because of innapropriateness, it's because they don't want you collecting information and knowledge in that medium and prefer their propaganda transmitted to your mind in a different way: television.

Well, that's true.

What would be justifiable?

Didn't I say I couldn't think of any at the moment. :P
Well maybe the themes could be controversial, politically or religiously. Other books are banned simply for the reason that they're "inappropriate" for their targeted demographic, or sometimes it's because they're afraid of the book.
One example of a frequently challenged but should-be-read-by-everyone book that I can think of right now is The Giver.

so what? it's one very slippery slope from banning a purely violent book to banning 1984 due to the torture scenes

Uncle Tom's Cabin
Freedom of Speech: Noun, The right to express any opinion without censorship or restraint.
If it's offensive, don't read it! If you didn't know it was offensive, think 'this guy's a jerk' and put the book down.

There's a banned book called "When will Jesus bring the pork chops?", a parody of Jesus's last dinner from the Bible.
It's pretty obvious why it was banned.

Should we define what "banned" means? Is something banned if the local library refuses to have it for borrowing, or is it banned if I can't carry it around in my town?
Anyway, the banning of book is idiotic regardless of their subject matter. No matter what you consider "justifiable" for the banning of a book, it shouldn't be. I don't care for the idea behind Fifty Shades, but I'd argue for it if someone tried to ban it.
I don't seem to have a problem with banning of books where I live. I've been able to borrow several "commonly challenged" books (1984, Catcher In The Rye) and could probably find many more if I wanted.

You want the "vital anti-slavery tool" to shut up and stop offending people or you are giving an example of a commonly challenged book?

Most people who have an opinion and wish to voice it in some medium will stay true to it and not always just succumb to masses and "shut up".

Well, I can understand why some books are banned (like not adding any value to society), but on the other hand, people are free to choose whatever they want to read.
Like Voltaire said: "I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

Bible is viewed as holy by most people including many jews who don't eat pork as part of their religion.
