The topic for the band Fun. started turning into a discussion about alternative music in general, so I decided to make this topic just to alleviate the offtopic banter on the other, and also because I think we all really needed a forum topic just for indie music.
So here is where we discuss all the different forms of the loose genre - alternative/indie. It can refer to a variety of different artists with varying styles, from the aggressive grunge, to the offbeat indietronica, melodic Britpop, jangly college rock, and, if it's more your cup of tea, some of the alternative pop/indie folk that's gotten quite popular lately.
Discuss your favorite bands, artists, and albums, or what new albums you're looking forward to at the moment, and so on.
I've been enjoying Blur, St. Vincent, the Posies, Suede, the Coral, Spacehog lately. Also, I've been listening to a bit of trip-hop lately, which I guess counts as indie to an extent.

I've heard good things about him, and that he's a varied musician, but I haven't listened to any of his records as of yet. Which do you suppose would be good to start with?

Sounds great. I'll check his stuff out later tonight when my Internet speed actually allows me to listen to music.

I'm getting into MGMT and Empire of the Sun.
Try and ignore how strange the videos are.

He's really good. I started listening to him when I first heard Romulus and Chicago

Forgot to mention I've recently been listening to Ride and Ocean Colour Scene.
If you've never heard of Ride, check out Nowhere if you like shoegazing, and Carnival of Light if you're more into standard Britpop.

If by that you mean long and uncommon, then yes
But if you're just overusing the word 'hipster', no

Those are albums and I can't really imagine how those are particularly hipster. They're nothing like Guided by Voices', with song titles like "Class Clown Spots a UFO", "A Good Flying Bird", "The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory", and "The Best of Jill Hives. And that's nowhere close to the titles of My Bloody Valentine: "I Only Said", "Is This and Yes", "If I Am", "In Another Way", "Nothing Is", "To Here Knows When", "Sometimes", "No More Sorry", etc.

And possibly my favorite - Robert Calvert's "Franz Joseph Strauss, Defence Minister, Reviews The Luftwaffe In 1958 Finding It Somewhat Lacking In Image Potential".

Number 1 yes.
I mean, has Justin Beiber ever released a song called, "A Heartfelt Pop Song About A Teenage Love That Broke Up And The Point of This Song is For Her To Know That She Is Still Special To This Boy With a Song Featuring Overused Lyrics But The Mood is Somewhere There."

Illinois actually has a song called "The Black Hawk War, or, How to Demolish an Entire Civilization and Still Feel Good About Yourself in the Morning, or, We Apologize for the Inconvenience but You're Going to Have to Leave Now, or, 'I Have Fought the Big Knives and Will Continue to Fight Them Until They are Off Our Lands!'" and of Montreal's got one called "Hitler, Being Punished for Obvious Reasons, is Forced to Spend Eternity Plagued by an Intense Unrelenting Physical and Emotional Fatigue That is Further Compounded by an Innumerable Multitude of Obnoxious Grandchildren Who are Constantly Present and Who Irritate Him to Such an Extreme That Not the Slightest Degree of Rest is Attainable".

I for one believe the terms "indie" and "indie music" must refer to independent bands, and that only; i.e. not as a synonym for "alternative music". Not that anyone here referred to it this way AFAIK, just wanted to bring it up.
So Frozen Coco is indie rock: we mix and release our stuff ourselves.

Mother of Scott Stapp...I must listen to these songs right now and enjoy them immensely.
Also, though not as long a title as of Montreal's, there's a Pink Floyd titled "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In a Cave and Grooving with a Pict".

I have heard of that one, mainly because of Super Furry Animals (who I haven't really listened to, although I've heard they're good as well!)

I got into St. Vincent right around when Marry Me was released (which I still consider her best album), and promptly forgot all about her until Actor.
Trip-hop is probably 35% of the music I listen to nowadays, mostly due to Majestic Casual, which I've mentioned before.

indie usually refers more to of the culture of the specific genre though, not just independent music in general

I think the fact that I can hear those bands on the radio + buy t-shirts & CDs at the supermarket goes to show that they're a little mainstream.
Some of my favourite indie bands are My Sister in 1994, Orso, and Francine. There are others I like but they have vulgar words in their names, though most of their songs are pretty "clean."

Empire of the Sun played on the radio. YES YES YES
