I haven't asked anyone about sharing a hotel, no. No offence to anyone who might be offering, but the idea is slightly scary...

There are things to see in Barcelona.  They had a good modern art museum when I was there in my youth, plus all those Gaudi buildings.

I haven't asked anyone about sharing a hotel, no. No offence to anyone who might be offering, but the idea is slightly scary...

Ah, you haven't met JSO.  He's a kid, you know, and about the least scary person you could imagine.  (Although, I guess maybe by now he's technically not a kid, I'm not sure.  But only barely, if so.)  Tb10 is quite non-scary, too, although apparently not in the room-sharing market.

EDIT: Now, if I were suggesting you share a room with me, that'd be scary.  I snore.

Anyway, I thought it was only Americans who were paranoid, but I guess it's the times more than the place.  Back in the day, when lots of people regularly turned out for huge political demonstrations and/or rock festivals, we used to room with total strangers, and pick up hitchhikers, and think nothing of it.  (And people haven't gotten more violent, quite the opposite in fact.  Just more scared.)

But, you know, the closest Google-recommended hotel is only about US$80/night.  Your non-yob family can afford that.  smile

EDIT: Too bad one can't change one's sig for a single message... "Everything first class, except blob."

That's kinda the point  tongue  I'm sure they're lovely people, but I'd rather meet them first, I guess. If it weren't in a foreign country I'd probably be much happier about it. I am probably being silly. Ah well...  smile

Ah, well.  If it's like most conferences you won't spend much time in your hotel room anyway; you'll be too busy having interesting conversations in the lobby most of the night.  tongue   If I'm remembering Spain correctly, the restaurants start serving lunch around 4pm and supper around 2am.  (Okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration.)

I've just noticed the (second) pronoun here.  Do I have the wrong idea about you?  Are you self-supporting?  Are you an adult?  (Is this the sort of question I'm not supposed to ask?)

Nah, it's a fine question! I am technically an adult, but only just; and I do still live with my parents, so I'm not self-supporting or anything. I thought I'd pay for going to the conference myself -- but as it turns out, mum said they'll pay for the hotel, to make sure I don't end up in some scummy place...  tongue

Oh dear, syncing conversations between the two threads is going to be painful.

FYI, having a self-proclaimed off-topic thread in the Advanced Topics sections where you openly claim to plan on teasing a Community Moderator may not be that wise.

Well, the C.M. in question doesn't seem to be shutting us down... and, you know, we've been close friends for years now.  He's allowed to tease me, too.  I don't (obviously, I guess) subscribe to the newfangled (American) idea that all teasing is automatically bullying regardless of motivation.

The discussion about Barcelona, for example, while off topic for the new Snap! thread, is totally on topic for Advanced Topics.  But, okay, to make you happy:

Snap! thread: for posts from/to Snap! users, including bug reports

BYOB3 thread: for discussions, including technical discussions, among the (extended) Snap! Team.

How's that?  smile

Peter Kropotkin wrote:

Legislators confounded in one code the two currents of custom of which we have just been speaking, the maxims which represent principles of morality and social union wrought out as a result of life in common, and the mandates which are meant to ensure external existence to inequality.
Customs, absolutely essential to the very being of society, are, in the code, cleverly intermingled with usages imposed by the ruling caste, and both claim equal respect from the crowd. "Do not kill," says the code, and hastens to add, "And pay tithes to the priest." "Do not steal," says the code, and immediately after, "He who refuses to pay taxes, shall have his hand struck off."
Such was law; and it has maintained its two-fold character to this day. Its origin is the desire of the ruling class to give permanence to customs imposed by themselves for their own advantage. Its character is the skillful commingling of customs useful to society, customs which have no need of law to insure respect, with other customs useful only to rulers, injurious to the mass of the people, and maintained only by the fear of punishment.

I like to believe that I'm not irresponsible, but official rules range all the way from good to terrible, with most in the middle ground: good a lot of the time, but with plenty of exceptional cases in which they're irrelevant or downright wrong.

In the two cases at hand: (1) It's absolutely in the interest of the Barcelona conference to have a strong representation of kids doing amazing things for the Scratch community.  And (2) I think the recent discussion on this thread, taken as a whole, is absolutely in the spirit of the Scratch community and the spirit of Advanced Topics.  I suppose it could be argued that starting a math puzzle thread in "Things I'm Reading etc" would broaden the accessibility of that part of our discussion.

Hey, anyone want to suggest a name for my future programming language? I considered Zem, but I doubt most people will get the reference.  smile  It's amazing how every single name I thought of before that has been taken: Neon, Helix, Carbon, Graphite…

The first time was for an extended argument about politics with Shadow.  (We were both polite, respectful, calm, and not ad hominem.)  Once was for a rant about how hypocritical schools are about language, because at the one where I volunteer they treat saying "shut up" exactly like saying (six letters, starts with N, derogatory term for black people) and yet teachers tell kids to shut up six times a minute, just in more convoluted language.  One was for tellling Lucario that I was traveling to near where he lives and would be glad to meet him f2f if he got a parent to drop me an email -- the moderator didn't quite yell at me, but did add a message emphasizing the part about the parent.  Those are the ones I remember...

I had to look that up; it's going to be awkward to use that.

On second thought, maybe I could read the book, then implement the language.

Nah, the comma was supposed to be a period, ending the sentence.  We old people can't see the difference between a comma and a period on these newfangled computers.

PS The computer on my desk at work is called abbenay.cs.berkeley.edu.  smile

PPS But of course you can't use that name for your language if it has type declarations or similar dumb restrictions!
