How do I Edit and Save Sprites WITHIN the Program?

So right now I'm practicing with a drawing program so I can use the technique for other programs later on. But I was wondering, is it possible to paint sprites, or paint on existing sprites then later use them in the game/program?

(I'm trying to make a character creator, where you can actually draw out your character and then have it show up later in the game.)

I appreciate any help! ^-^

I think there is, somewhere in there.  Just not sure what it is.
