I'm installing Scratch on a eee pc 1000 and the new version just shows a black screen, and sometimes freezes up.
The outdated version (1.4.0.1) apparently works (at least it is possible to run it), but it has no icon in the side bar (just a question mark).
I've tried using apt-get, downloading the .deb and installing from the package manager, so probably there is a problem with Scratch, and not with the installation.
Is there some incompatibility with netbooks?
Thank you in advance

It never showed an icon for me.
It's a problem with the Scratch on Linux, i think. Are you sure you have the Squeak VM installed?

Hmm... let's try something. Try editing the file /usr/bin/scratch
Near the top you'll see a line that starts with:
VMOPTIONS=
It should have a part that says "-xshm" . Just remove that, so your VMOPTIONS line now looks like this:
VMOPTIONS="-encoding UTF-8 -vm-display-x11 -plugins /usr/lib/scratch/plugins/:$SQ_DIR/"
See if that helps, and let us know!

It worked for me too.
Since i'm a newbie Ubuntu user, i've got a hard time modifying the scratch file in the usr/bin folder since i hadn't write access to this folder. Here's how i did it:
1. Open a terminal window
2. Write and run this command: gksudo gedit /usr/bin/scratch
3. In gedit, remove the "-xshm" in the VMOPTIONS line, save and close the file
4. Run scratch!

Is it possible that the permissions could mess up your computer?

It seems Scratch is glitchy and totally broken in Ubuntu 12.04. Controls get messed up, sometimes one or two key inputs ket stuck, graphics flickers...
Tried several projects, and they all demonstrated such behavior.
Same projects work just fine in Win XP.
