I definitely remember seeing FireRed in Target, and I also remember seeing Half Life 2 there also, but of course my dad wouldn't let me get it. :P
I also remember saving up for a GBA SP and getting FireRed for my fifth birthday, twas awesome.

Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Mario Kart 64 and DK Country 3 were all released in '96, and I've played them in my early years 
Seems like it was a good year for gaming.
Also, all of these (got some of the above off this page lol). Crash Bandicoot (the first) and Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall are some highlights, but I've never played them.
