(People stole all the other silly plays and parodies on the "Official Topic" thing)
Fire Emblem is a "fantasy tactical role-playing video game", where you move units around a grid and have to use battle strategy to overcome opponents. If a character dies, they are dead for the entire game - making it really feel like you are commanding soldiers into life or death situations.
Anybody else like these games?
What is you favorite entry?
What did you think of the new entry, Awakening?

Ike is the best character.
And Awakening is amazing dude. The side-by-side support system is awesome and adds quite a bit of depth to the way you move around the battle.

Dungeons and Dragons is epic. If you've never heard of it you should look it up. It's like a role-playing game but it's not a video game.
1. Who hasn't heard of Dungeons and Dragons?
2. They only share the role-playing aspect - you control a team of fighters strategically in Fire Emblem; in D&D you control one character.
3. I have played, but we didn't really have anyway to have regular meetups so it was only the once.
And 4. Why are you invading the Fire Emblem topic with D&D in the first place?

Oh yes of course
"trollpasta" is more popular on here than one of the greatest game series ever

I am planning to start playing them after hearing about all the acclaim (from none other than you, soup).
I've been watching gameplay videos, they seem great! A bit surprised that I overlooked this game for so long.

Cool!
Be prepared to play on Easy the first time you play one, and don't be afraid to turn off your system/restart the game when you lose a character in battle.
But don't play on casual. Once again - casual is for wimps.

So which game should I start off with?
I was thinking the GBA game (the first game in the US) or from the beginning with the Japanese games?
EDIT: I downloaded the ROM of the GBA game, it's all right so far, I'm still trying to get used to the gameplay format, it's much different than other games.

IMO, Path of Radiance (GameCube) or Awakening (3DS)
There is a translated re-release onto GBA I won as well which was okay.
Don't emulate it
Or at least buy a copy if you like it based on that!
The developers deserve the money.\
Don't bother with the Japanese games unless you speak Japanese and have the ability to play them - there's not much of an over-arching story to worry about. There is lore throughout the entire series, but all the games seem pretty well self-contained form what I've seen.

Okay I'll see if I can get my hands on a physical cart.
But really though are they still making moolah off of the GBA version? :P

Oh I didn't mean the GBA version.
As far as I know, the older American releases didn't move many sales in the first place, and the series is still a bit under-the-radar even if it is critically acclaimed.
I mainly meant the newer versions, for Wii and 3DS. Obviously, any entirely new copy you find will be giving them moolah.

Of course I wouldn't emulate the Gamecube or 3DS versions, that's just evil. :P
Anyways I just started the GBA game and it's okay so far. The battle system is pretty unique, I must say.

I got the 3DS version just over the weekend. It's a pretty good game - it has a lot of strategic depth from characters to stats (though there's still an element of luck), as well as a deep story. Though I haven't finished the game yet by any means. (Also there's DLC which I hope to get). Keep in mind it's my first game in the series. :P
I started watching a Let's Play of the GBA game on YouTube, and it looks like it's also a good edition of the series - hopefully it will eventually come on the 3DS or Wii U eShop eventually.

I'm a 3DS Ambassador, and one of my GBA games I got on VC for free was Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones.
Oh my god, it is awesome. I HATE having to start the entire chapter over whenever I lose someone, though.

How do you become a 3DS ambassador, anyway?

You had to have gotten it before the price went down--aka while it was still $250.

Oh gosh, I should have checked the Ambassador program back when they updated.
A free Fire Emblem game and I've been sitting out on it.
I'll download it later I guess.
Is Lute a healer or something? If he's not, push him into battle against people with low health occasionally to give him kill XP and level faster, while removing most danger. If he IS a healer, keep him in the back and have injured people come to him, not him to them.
I used to hate perma-death when I was little, but it is part of the experience IMO. (read: you can pretty much let everyone die then get them back at the end, eliminating the challenge, otherwise.)

She's an anima mage.
I think it's because she's not fast enough to attack twice and her fire isn't that powerful.
The real reason is probably just because the A.I. attacks the person in front, and usually three of them are conviently close enough to attack at once, leading to certain death.
And if more than 1 person is at the front, they attack the same person the first guy attacked.

Bump.
So, I got to chapter 5 on Sacred Stones. After a few turns, Artur and Lute (Mages) were ambushing the left side, and then three bandits showed up. I had them run for their life, and meanwhile on another point in the map, Gilliam (Knight), Franz (Cavalier), Natasha (Claric), and whats-his-face(Fighter, forgot his name, but he's the Father of Ross) were fighting off enemies when I got an idea. Artur and Lute got chased to the stairway that the 4 others were at the top of (Not an actual staircase, just another type of tile--single square) I had the 4 of them come down, forming a barricade between the Bandits and Artur and Lute, who weren't in the best shapes of their lives. The battle was tough, but Gilliam, Franz and Ross's dad (Once again, forgot his name) managed to defeat the bandits without dying. Then Natasha and Moulder healed them all.
This is why I play strategy games like Fire Emblem. To experience moments like that. I'm surprised I survived.
Now to complete the other half of the map...
