Not if you're speaking with people who understand them! They're much more clarifying and wonderful in such instances (especially if you've created a keyboard layout with the symbol, for ease of access).

how is the irony mark confusing? you just place it in at the end of a sentence when youre being sarcastic which helps clarify that youre not being serious
