A guide to successful collaborating.

Just realised this was sticky'd. No wonder I couldn't find it on the 2nd or 3rd page  tongue

For a really successful collaboration, start with an idea and build on it. Decide what you really want to make.

Now before you post a topic in the Collaborations forums, think again. Is this going to work out? Do I have the right skills? Even if a lot of people are working together, the leader has to know how to make it happen for anything good to happen.

Now you have your idea. Wait! Don't post that topic yet! Think of people you know, or people that you don't know that well yet. Make a list. What kind of skills do these people have? Try not to list all the "famous" people on Scratch because you're more likely to get a great collaboration with some active Scratchers that collaborate well.

Yep, that's right! Don't post the topic yet  tongue  Ask those people whether they would be interested in participating in the collab. Try and be persuasive but don't be pushy. If people join, great! If not, leave them. They might join later.  smile  A popup thing saying "unmatched ")" came up just then. Oh well, I am typing this up on a programming text editor xP

Now post your topic. Give details about what you will be working on (remember step 1?) and list the people participating. Don't try to get lots and lots of people. Most successful collabs have very few (less than 7) members, but they must be active members.

Well, the rest is up to you. Some tips I would like to tell you though, are:

Keep updates regular — make sure everyone in the collab knows what they have to do and what's going on in the collab.

Participate — Just because you started the collab doesn't mean you don't participate. In fact, you should be doing more work than anyone else!

Credit — Credit all the participators in the final project.

Happy collaborating!  smile

Amazing guide, Skyline! I guess all the collabs i've been have been missing at least one of these, and they've all failed.  tongue

Thanks Sci! Well, all these steps seem very important to me, and you're right, not many collaborations follow all these guidelines  smile

Re: A guide to successful collaborating.

Does anybody want to make a collab game with me, you can view my project 'Droid-o-Jump: The Complete Edition to see what kind of games I make, what I really need more than a fellow programmer is an artist, somebody who is able to depict my characters through visuals,

I wasn't trying to advertise my game, I was seeing if anybody would like to collab with me, I was just telling anybody who would like to collab that they could see my work on my page. So I'll ask again, would anybody on this page like to collab?

wolvesstar97 was saying that this isn't the thread for you to advertise your collab or start a collab. To start one you should create a new thread in the Collaboration Forums, the one you are reading this post in.

Re: A guide to successful collaborating.

Maybe you should add in another small paragraph about organization. That's another key part to successful collaborations (due to the fact that I just quit a collab because of that.)

P.S. nice guide.

Thanks. I might do that, once I work out what to say about it. Also, Lightnin seems to have deleted or unsticky'd his About Collaborations topic... why though?  hmm

But that goes against what it says in the topic post!

I definitely agree. My newspaper has maybe 5 people (including myself) that are helping out, and we still reach our goals.

Re: A guide to successful collaborating.

Good guide, but you should add a bit more to who to choose for your collab. You definitely want active members, but you need to make sure they aren't in too many things already, as so many active scratchers are. Then they may have to quit on you. It is also a good plan to get them to promise to check the thread whenever they come on, to make sure things get done. Just a few things I thought I would add. Still a great guide though!  big_smile

Re: A guide to successful collaborating.

Hello. I just logged in. I want to make a project collaboratively, with my students. The are in different schools, so I need a space online in order to work in distance. Which way? Thank you!

Re: A guide to successful collaborating.

You could get them to register on scratch, then communicate on a forum topic, or use other services like email and chat.

Dropbox could also be used in to collaborate in an online space, wherfiles can be shared. I hope that helps  smile

Re: A guide to successful collaborating.

Thank you very much for your answer.
What I am looking is something like Googledocds, where the application (p.ex. word processor) is already existed in a cloud and you can work collaboratively online at the same document.
In dropbox, we can not work the project online. We should upload it and then download it locally and then again upload it and ...
Is there an already installed scratch platform online, like googledocs or wikispaces, where projects saved online?

Thank you again for your support.  smile

Re: A guide to successful collaborating.

Skype has chat, and screen sharing and used with dropbox could be useful. No there's no official scratch real time collaboration area, as it would include a chat, and a chat would cause problems with inappropriate questions.
Maybe ask on the educators forum as well?
