To be completely honest, i prefer underground houses to normal houses.
Why?
-More room for building
-Safer from lightning
-It feels nicer
Cons
-Sometimes replacing stone with wood is a pain
-Light it up, or mobs will spawn
Which do you prefer?

Underground. They're also safer from mobs, so long as everything is well lit. Plus, just building can get you diamonds, iron, or redstone (depending on how deep your house is)!

Minecraft brainwashed my friends...
but not me.

I like underground, also.
I'll post pictures of my cave house in a minute.

Minecraft is seriously annoying for above ground houses, I really want to start building above ground but Notch decided that the best thing about SMP was people blowing up your house.
Seriously, what was he thinking when he added creepers? I really want to just sit back and enjoy vanilla as it is but every time I'm forced underground just because creepers can wreck everything and it's easier to light up a cave than it is to light up a massive field.

Walls. You need walls.
Remember what the Governor said.
Walls keep you alive.

Or, instead of building huge, ugly walls and turning every construction into a resource hungry castle, I could move underground and make something better looking.
Or I could tame 1 cat for every 5x5 area in the town and put them underground to scare off creepers.
Then again moving into a cave would be easier.
No matter how you look at it the best way to do it without ruining the landscape or spending 90% of your time making sure creepers can't get in is to move into a cave.

Meh, I just have a bunch of outposts and one big house. My big house is more symbolic than anything, the real power is in the basement.

Or you could take the time to learn how to fight them

I've been thinking, I want to learn to mod, and when I do, I'll make a mod that can only be installed into a 1.7.3 jar! It would, of course, have vanilla-ish features, like spears, beekeeping, and shipbuilding. I would bring things like better combat "back from the future" so to speak. Some features, namely the Sky Dimension, would be implemented. And last but not least, I would like to combine it with the retired seasons mod.
...And block deployers. JEB, WHAT YOU HAVE AGAINST TOTAL AUTOMATION?

I think, specifically, it was the best survival multiplayer version.
