As I've said before, Twilight still has more to learn as a princess. Celestia mentioned that.
So she's not a complete Mary Sue.

Yeah, solved pretty easily, but I don't think that's inherently a bad thing. Her ability to come to a solution just shows how much she's grown over 3 seasons. This was a test to she if she had really learned how to be a friend, and a culmination of all she's learned so far. This feels more like a transition to a new direction for the show, and I'm nervous, but also a little excited to see how it turns out come season 4.

True, true. Still, it feels rather... sudden. It's a shame we'll have to wait a while for S4.

You ever thought that there could be a Pokemon style MLP game?
You get Applejack at the start (earth pony duh) and the level up your Ponies (you get either Rarity or Twilight further on and finally Rainbow Dash or Fluttershy) so you can become strong enough to defeat Discord and save Princess Celestia.
In Pokemon fashion, Ponies have movesets and with the three ponies you aquire, you get to befriend Discord's minions with the elements of Magic. For example, you could use the element of Love to make an opponent more friendly and more vunrerable to normal magic/physical moves. Minions are either special creatures that Discord has created or hypnotised ponies - the further through the game, the harder it is to defeat the minions.
