Okay most of us knew about nursery rhymes. We thought they were so innocent. But as we get older some of us found out what message was trying to get across. Take "Ring Around The Rosie" for example...It was based off the Bubonic Plauge in the Middle Ages...
Ring around the rosies
Pocket full of posies
Ashes, ashes,
We all fall down
Now read the color-coded meaning
If you were infected, you had a red ring on your skin around he "rosies" (boils, I suppose?)
The posies covered the scent of dead bodies
They burned the dead bodies, as there was no more room to bury them
Most people died in that era due to the plauge
Anyone have the meaning to other nursery rhymes? I'll also accept stories such as "Little Red Riding Hood" if theres some sort of creepy message I missed in there. (it would be prefered if you put the meaning of the lyrics)I knew that from the day I was 6. :3
I just love your signature! WINNER!!! (especially the zelda one ^^)

all nursery rhymes and fairy tales are actually really dark
kids getting baked in the oven
a wolf eating pigs
a wolf eating a grandma and getting cut open with an axe
murderous giants
etc.in the grimm's fairy tales version of cinderella, her sisters cut off the sides/heels of their feet to fit into the shoe and a bird notices and sings this little ditty:
turn and peep, turn and peep,
there's blood within the shoe,
the shoe it is too small for her,
the true bride waits for you.and let's not forget their punishment
When the betrothed couple went to church, the elder was at the right side and the younger at the left, and the pigeons pecked out one eye from each of them. Afterwards as they came back the elder was at the left, and the younger at the right, and then the pigeons pecked out the other eye from each.
Dude, thats in my reading textbook, I think. 0_0 Its supposedly the german version of cinderella, and its called "Ashtenputchel" (or at least I remember how its spelled. its been quite a while since I looked at the the title.) We never read it as a class... come to think of it, we havent opened it since we read "Three Skeleton Key"... I think thats the only story we've read in there, actually...

i like how more recently people try to put dark spins of fairy tales and stuff and think they're all original when that's how they started off
creepy and dark --> adapted for little kids --> creepy and dark --> ___

If the pattern keeps going, they'll be happy again!
Or more creepy, but who cares?

Yeah, they're all online.

http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/perrault.html (this one has some other stuff as well as a few of the same tales that are slightly different)For the first link, what's the title? Is it just Sleeping Beauty? Or is it something else? 'Cause I couldn't find it...
Brier Rose is the more appropriate one and Sun, Moon, and Talia is the inappropriate one. Both are pretty gorey, though.

Not "supposedly" the German version, it is. That fact is undisputed.

And they are still way dumber
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunter
Snow White and The Hunstman
Just use the original story and you'll be fine!

Actually, the original Snow White wasn't really as dark as most others.
Proof: I have a Brothers Grimm book.

There's also the matter of length, since the story has to be able to fit about 100-120 minutes.

The wicked woman uttered a curse, and she became so frightened, so frightened, that she did not know what to do. At first she did not want to go to the wedding, but she found no peace. She had to go and see the young queen. When she arrived she recognized Snow-White, and terrorized, she could only stand there without moving.
Then they put a pair of iron shoes into burning coals. They were brought forth with tongs and placed before her. She was forced to step into the red-hot shoes and dance until she fell down dead.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but Humpty Dumpty was about a real cannon that fell off a building (if I remember correctly).
