I class myself as a basic hardcore gamer. I loved the PSP. I'm looking into buying a 3ds (I WILL get the XL one though as i have big hands and I'm not comfortable with the smaller one and never have been). I don't own a ds. the games i like on the 3ds are Metal Gear Solid 3d and Resident Evil Revelations, are their any other games like this available on a 3ds for people like me and should i get a 3ds at all?

Yes. POKEMANZ EX AND WHY?

No.
If you're a "hardcore gamer", sadly the 3DS does not excel (bahaha see what I did there) in that category. Resident Evil Revelations is good but really the 3DS is more of a kiddy console, which comes as no surprise, Nintendo always cater to the "younger" market. The game library is decent (unlike the Wii), but not for FPS players (even though RER is a TPS but you get the point).
A better choice would be a PS Vita, if you say you loved the PSP. The Vita is a much more hardcore and mature console, and quite big, except the analog sticks might be a little too small for your apparently large hands. The Vita has games like Mortal Kombat, COD, Uncharted, among others, it's a PS3 on the go, basically. Only downside is the 3DS beats the Vita by kilometers in terms of sales and popularity, but the Vita truly is superior. I don't have one, but my friend does and I can safely say it's much better than the 3DS.
Also guys please respect his opinion and taste in video games, as there are whiny little kids on here going "BLEH YOU LEIK FIRST PERSON SHOOTAS YOURE SADISTIC AND VIOLENTTT", you know exactly who you are.

if you like the games it has then get it, it's not bad or broken or anything as far as I know. unless you're scared of losing your HARDCORE GAMER CRED in which case just hide it whenever other humans are around. just get it if you want it! (◡‿◡✿)

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, unless you have a Wii U, then get it on that :P
I was going to say something about 'hardcore' gamers, but I thought I would probably be starting a flame war in doing so.
See this is what I meant you were probably going to be panning him for liking shooter games, there's nothing wrong with them!

Yes.
LUIGI'S MANSION 2.

If you want to play 'hardcore games' on a 'non-hardcore device' get an iPad or similar tablet. It's a similar price (I think???), and you can do other stuff on it too
Offline
My definition of "hardcore" is that you actively play games and know some inside and out.
It really depends if you are a nintendo fan, if you are, DEFINITELY get one.

iPad 2 -> $400 (approx.)
3DS XL -> $200 (approx.)
Li'l bit of a difference there. I don't believe those games are available for the iPad, either, so it doesn't seem like the best fit.

I thought the 3DS was way more expensive than that... maybe Australian pricing

You're talking entirely different stuff here, as veggie said.
The iPad is a $400 device meant to be a casual use device, that can browse the Internet, manage documents and play some games - most of which are aimed at the same casual users the iPad is meant for.
The 3DS, on the other hand, is a device meant exclusively for gaming, and thus game companies would rather aim their "core" releases at this console, than the iPad. And it's twice as cheap, if veggie is right. c:
@OP, I believe you shouldn't try to live up to the "hardcore gamer" stereotype - I believe you are doing this - and instead acquire game consoles based on whether you like the games released for them, and the game experience the product provides.
A comment in the article luiysia linked to, explains this very well:

I couldn’t live without games! But I think true hardcore [gamers], don’t go around calling themselves that. People like me just play games, because we love it, not to for anything else but the seek of adventure and fantasy.

3DS XL = two small tablets on top of each other
Tablet = 1 big tablet

That's not how it works at all.
I mean
the DS was actually the original gaming touchscreen device, first of all
but it actually isn't two tablets.
Sure the bottom touchscreen could be called one, but the way it works as being geared toward gaming is MUCH better than an iPad could provide.
First of all, do not worry about how the iPad "can do other stuff", it is clear this person wants only a gaming device.
Now, the touchscreen on the DS is out of the way of the screen where most things will happen, which allows touch controls without the whole "my hand is in front of EVERYTHING" that I get playing non-casual games on a tablet.
And most of the games on the 3DS are exclusive to it, and it's pretty obvious tablet tiles will never be able to keep up with real systems
Also, physical slider and buttons.

Only the bottom screen is a touch screen. The games are really different and on a 3DS you get more out of them. It's a device designed for gaming. Tablets are for internet. Much, much different. Do you even own a DS/3DS?

Seriously do you even know what you said right there.
The 3DS XL is not "two small tablets".
Only the bottom screen is touch.
The screens are a fraction over the size of a cell phone's.
It has physical dedicated buttons (analog stick, xyab buttons, d-pad).
Your argument is invalid in so many ways.
Besides the OP is looking for a dedicated gaming device he isn't worried about "other stuff".

Only the bottom screen is touch?! O.o
And no, I obviously don't own one, but I've seen the '3D effect' from a friend's 3DS.

Yes, only the bottom screen is a touchscreen on any type of DS/DSi/3DS. Plus, it's mainly used with a stylus.
