Re: Recommend Music to Listen To

I'd recommend Panic! At The Disco. They aren't for everybody but they have extremely interesting lyrics that tell stories, and the singer, Brendon Urie has an amazing voice. I don't exactly know how to describe the music?

Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes

Madness - Muse

"Seven Nation Army" is overrated and pretty bad by the Stripes' standards, in my opinion (no offense if you like it, it's still a pretty good song). However, some better songs off of Elephant that I would try are "Ball and Biscuit", "The Hardest Button to Button", and "Little Acorns"

Re: Recommend Music to Listen To

Ok, guys, sorry for the delay, but I decided I would be doing this every Tuesday night (though if you live around the East Coast, it may already be Wednesday morning). With that said, let's finally get some songs out of the way.

NeilWest wrote:

deadmau5's "Soma" or Justice's "One Minute Until Midnight".

I always liked house music - and these two artists I've always been relatively interested in. I'm somewhat familiar with deadmau5's work, having listened to two of his albums; as for Justice, I've heard a great deal about their work, and was interested in their mixture of rock and electronic, but I never got down to listening to them. Ok, let's see what we have.

First, deadmau5's "Soma". Ah, right, this is off "For Lack of a Better Name" - I've heard this album and actually quite enjoyed it. Don't really recall this track, though. Hmm, infectious little beat that starts off the song. Ok, now the music somewhat diminishes and reaches that little piano bit that I've heard many people brag about. They're right, it really is quite lovely - in fact, it's sort of a nice little breather after the industrial feel of the rest of the record. Then the compressed beat from the beginning reappears. I always enjoyed deadmau5's beats and the way he manipulates them. Maybe it goes on for a little too long - it sort of is repeating a very simple beat, but I guess that's the key to the song. So, yeah, it's a pretty nice song. I would argue there are better tracks on the album, but this one still is good. Oh yeah, and I also like how they piano bit gets distorted around the end.

Now for my first time listening to Justice, with "One Minute to Midnight", which appears to be the final track on their more house-oriented debut, "Cross".

Holy, that intro nearly burst my earphones. That'll teach me to have them on so loud.  tongue  I like it so far, has a Daft Punk-ish feel (one of my favorite house artists). Now a bit of electric guitar riffing comes in, which gives it a nice rocky edge. Yeah, I think this song is really, really good - I'll definitely listen to Cross and their other albums. GOLD STAR.

U2 - Pride(In the Name of Love)

My English teacher showed this to me today, and the whole class was speechless afterwards.

U2 are one of those bands I really, really love, but at the same time, I feel I need to learn a lot more about them. And with this band, I really mean a lot. I've heard a couple of their albums, specifically Boy, October, The Joshua Tree, half of War, and bits and pieces of Achtung Baby and All That You Can't Leave Behind. But still, I still need some catching up to do. This song is off of The Unforgettable Fire, an album that I haven't heard at all yet. Let's listen to it - I'll tell you what, if I like the song to the point where I'm compelled to listen to the entire album, I'll say that's worth a gold star.

Ok. This is my new favorite U2 song. Seriously, this beats "With or Without You" by a mile, and that's a song I also really like. What can I say, this is the ultimate U2 song. Bono's vocals are top-notch, The Edge's riffs are as jangly as ever, the ambience, the provocative images, the cinematic quality - it's flawless. What else is there to say but, GOLD STAR.

I've got three more bands -- BADBADNOTGOOD, Galactic, and the Stanton Moore Trio. Check them all out - BBNG's music is mostly jazzy rap covers, Galactic is classic funk, and Stanton Moore Trio is not-so-classic funk.

All right, I'll listen to your recs and it'll be good for today. Your suggested bands seem to be fairly R&B-influenced - while I am more of a rock/indie/electronica person, I often do crave some good old R&B, whether it's jazz, funk, soul, or raw blues. Let's see what you reccomended.

For BADBADNOTGOOD, or BBNG, as I've seen people abbreviating them (and I'll be obliged to call them that from now on), I found the song "Fall in Love". Hmm, the intro is interesting. It's haunting in some places and other times rather relaxing in its loungish key glissandos. One-minute mark, the drums come in, and I'm really digging the vibe. Rather funky, in fact. At about 2:30, that's when it gets a bit more powerful. Yeah, this is good. It's pure, unprecedented, good ol' jazz. Is it worth a gold star? Yeeaahhnnnnooouhhhhhhokay.

For Galactic, I found the song "Church". Aw yeah, nice funky bassline. One-minute mark - this is a really cool song. It's like an edgier version of smooth jazz. To quote some person who got the top comments on the YouTube page for this song, it's "got enough groove to feed a small army of maggot brains". Well said, and nice Funkadelic reference. Right, I'm definitely digging this one, too. Not gold star material but, I this is definitely first-rate jazz. Definitely be coming back to these guys.

And finally the Stanton Moore Trio, for whom I've found the song "(Late Night at the) Maple Leaf". Pretty powerful - has some groovy keys, admirably complex drum beat at the back. It's a pretty good jam. It's what I like about jam, sometimes you want to listen to something with just a proper groove and ideal band interaction.

Overall, all of those three bands you've listed I really enjoyed, and if I'm ever in a fix for some jazz, I'll surely come to these guys.

Thanks for the recs, guys, like I said in the beginning of the post, I'll be doing these every Tuesday night now, so look out for some more reviews next week.  big_smile

Guys, I'm really sorry I wasn't able to review your stuff, but I was moving and had (and still have) a very limited Internet. I'm probably gonna have to close this temporarily until I can properly review your recs. It'll probably be back open in about, eehh, 3 weeks. C:
