Re: Raspberry Pi Official Topic

Not really, since not of the programs I installed were buggy and didn't work. Gimp worked the best, but even that crashed from time to time.

Gimp isn't exactly a lightweight tool. Anything that you expect to run on a 700MHz smartphone CPU needs to be.  tongue

I would make a web server with my Pi, but my internet is really bad.  sad

I was on my Ubuntu installation on my kindle fire (see previous posts).

BTW, my fire is over clocked to 1.2 GHz.

Re: Raspberry Pi Official Topic

So Rasberry Pi is a kind of chip you can download different operating systems on?

Pretty much, though it is a board, not just a chip.

My and my dad just set up his Pi. And Scratch was on the Desktop. Did someone forget to mention it was preinstalled?

Re: Raspberry Pi Official Topic

Just wondering, but do the OSes installed on the RasPi need to be ARM-Optimized? I'm not sure but I know there isn't universal compatibility between Intel/AMD Chips and was wondering if that affects the Pi as well.

The OS has to be compiled for ARMv6. It won't work if it is compiled for x86. That is the reason why non-RT Windows cannot run on it. (Win8 RT can't either, but that is just licensing problems.)

It also can't be ARMv7 (what most smartphones use these days) because that specifies extra instruction sets the BCM2835 (chip on the RPi) doesn't have.

I decided to torture myself....

http://i.imgur.com/0Ztq5Vi.png

It took about 3 minutes to start (compared to 5 seconds on this desktop), and took 8 seconds to fill a 1920x1080 canvas with black.

Granted, this is an old version of Raspbian (August build).

Yep, though the B is worth the extra $10, unless you are a school buying a couple hundred of them.

@Laternen: You don't really need VNC, you can port a X11 (program that controls the GUI in *nix) session through SSH. All you need is to set up the forwarding correctly (on the computer connecting to the RPi) in Linux or OSX. You'll need to install an X server (like XMing) for Windows, though.

I would get model B, but I really only want one for coding with.

Anyway, I may be getting one  big_smile

Twice as many RAM and two USB ports should be totally worth it, yeah. c:

Still, you want the model B, even for python.
