I've been thinking about what kind of game I should make, and I decided I should go for a semi-sandbox game. Tycoon games immediately came to mind, I've always enjoyed them a lot. So, I asked my mom what I should make the game about. Obviously, she suggested Holiday Tycoon, since we haven't been on vacation in so long Eventually the idea morphed into Getaway Tycoon, where you launch, manage, build and maintain a theme park and resort empire.
Ideas so far:
You start out on a map screen, where you can select regions. In these regions there will be residential and commercial buildings on lots. Some of these lots will be empty. On these empty lots, you can build resorts, theme parks, and the like. The empty lots will be quite huge.
You get money from people visiting your resorts.
Resorts
There are 3 different resorts: Luxury hotel, beach, and a nature reserve. Luxury hotels can have pools, a spa, room service, and those kinds of things. You actually build the hotel; place and shape pools, build the hotel (choose shape, materials, etc), and decide what goes in (the extras mentioned earlier), all of which costs money (yes, this game has an economy ). The others are similar.
I'm not sure if it's good, but that's what we have the...
Designer
...for. The designer will be the person in charge of the way the game will work. (S)He will think of the ideas for the game, and will also test the development releases for bugs.
Artist
With this game being based in a simulation of the real world, lots of art will be necessary. The artist will tend to all of the graphical needs of the game.
If you'd like to apply for one of these positions, please post below. For the artist, I'm looking for somebody who does digital art, for example, with a tablet and GIMP. The designer will think of all of the game's functionality, so (s)he better be pretty creative. I will be the programmer, but we might ask for somebody to help if this gets a little too complicated.

I could be a designer. This seems really cool! Also, where have you been on the Metaphysics forum? (offtopic)
If you have ever played Sim City 4, there are "missions" where you play as a person and try to do something within a time limit. That would be cool.

Sure, you're in!
I have sim city 4, but I've never seen that functionality...
And yeah, I haven't checked the Meta forum in a while, sorry

Here's some advice-
I'd recommend that you start off doing a plan of the following: (I've left some ideas which you can delete if you like)
1) Logo?
2) Main Menu
-Button 1 (New game?)
-Button 2 (Load Game?)
-Button 3 (Tutorial?)
3) Tutorial #This only covers the theme park bit, you can add the hotel empire later
-Lesson 1 (Goals?)
-Lesson 2 (Interface?)
-Lesson 3 (Laying down paths and objects?)
-Lesson 4 (Maintaining Budget?)
-Lesson 5 (Keeping the park happy?)
4) Interface
-Save Game
-Music On/Off
-Show Graph Screens (If you need help coding these I'll help)
-Show Budget Screen
-Show Build Mode
-Show View Mode
-Full Map
5) Graphics #This only covers the theme park bit, you can add the hotel empire later
-Ride Animations
-People AIs (I can help them move along paths, but it would be a nice challenge for you lot)
-Day/Night

Oh, sorry. It's only there if you have Deluxe or you installed the expansion pack.
We could use some of the code from Generation 4013 or whatever.

*facedesk* How did I keep missing this...
Anywho, er, in case you're still interested, funny, Orca's already got that position. So yeah.
Still need an artist.
In the mean time, Orca, what do you have in mind for this game? :3

I've never played any tycoon game other than Sim City but I was thinking of majorly remixing Gen 4013.

Well, I don't really think it should be a remix...
Anyway, I'm up for programming the whole thing, so maybe you could base something off of Sim City that's more people-oriented?

Well, I'm out of ideas. Will this be a top view thing, or an isometric view?

*Stares up at ceiling* Lalalalala... Oh, hello there! Nom Nom Nom. An artist, you say? I'll be happy to oblige!
Silliness aside, I would like to be an artist for your group. (I recommend you have, like, 2 artists because irl I might have lots of schoolwork .3.) I use a tablet and Adobe Photoshop CS4, and I think I can handle the job. You guys are lucky Borrego gave you advice; you should see his tycoon projects! ^.^
Anyways, consider me for the job.

Isometric.
Hmm, maybe you could tweak the idea in the OP and add more detail, and devise some more functionality. I want this to be a complex game :3

So, okay, 2 artists could work. although we need them to be more or less the same, since we don't want style contrast visible in-game.

Alright. Maybe add rotation? You could stamp it out with run without screen refresh quickly. You could make custom buildings, if that's not too hard. You should be able to drive around the getaway place and do missions, as I said earlier. You should even be able to destroy it
What's OP?
You should let funnymee join. I can't do all the designing.

I can help with art, if you'd like! Don't go to my scratch gallery to see my art, because I haven't uploaded a project in years. recent art is here.

I'll be happy to help. I've played lots of sandbox games so I coud come up with plenty of ideas. I'm fairly good with pixel art and I pride myself when it comes to photoshop. What I really enjoy is scripting, especially when it includes maths. I won't be available all the time but given I remember about this, I will hep out with what I can.

And while you're looking for ideas i may as well throw some of mine in. I dont think rotating the view is a good idea at all because it will create a lot more lag for a function that isn't at all necessary. Building should be rotatable even if there are just 2 orientations. The screen should be separated into squares a little bit like transport tycoon and you should be able to drag objects onto the screen that lock to the tiles. I hope this helps give you ideas if nothing else. Thanks for reading
