BitTorrent Sync is an experimental (presumably cloud-based) software, currently under development by BitTorrent Inc., to "help manage files between multiple computers", as they put it.

They're looking to recruit a small amount of testers, and you can sign up for it by filling this form. I found it interesting myself, and I thought I'd let you guys know, in case any of you find this interesting too c:

Hmm... To get the advantages of BitTorrent you'd really need a lot of computers hooked up to the account, or a lot of servers to seed them.

@veggie To me it looks exactly like Dropbox. Though I haven't checked out the desktop app for that - I'm actually installing it right now tongue

@skittles Having lots of computers is exactly my case. I don't think you'll need computers to seed them, as the files will be stored in a cloud with 256-bit encryption.

Hmm. It seems kind of impractical IMO to have cloud-based storage to provide service via BitTorrent. In a standard HTTP service like Dropbox, they only need to store a user's files once (although it is good practice to keep backups and RAID arrays). BitTorrent relies on many computers seeding the files, so it would take many systems running that same setup to achieve the proper boosts in speed.

Well for one thing it's called "BitTorrent Sync." There's no reason for them to do something like this. Unless they roll out a highly inefficient server system to use the BT protocol, there's no reason to make this, and they'll just get left behind the likes of Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive and Kim Dotcom's new Mega.

Considering that's the company name, I don't see why not. And perhaps. We really just need to wait and see.

...but it turns out they are actually using the BitTorrent P2P protocol to share files. >.> Sounds like I'll just use Dropbox and pretend I never applied to test big_smile
