Moderator Summary: Scratch on iDevices

When will Scratch be available for my iPhone/iPad/iPod?

Many Scratchers have asked whether there is an app available in the Apple App Store for viewing and sharing Scratch projects. While this would be absolutely awesome, it is unlikely Apple will offer a Scratch application in the foreseeable future. Although an app was previously developed, it was rejected for violation of the App Store Terms of Service twice: first for the nature of the application, which interpreted and executed non-Apple code, and then for violating a rule about downloading content. So where does that leave you, the ordinary Scratcher? Well, here's a helpful post explaining your options:

If you want to run Scratch on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, you have several options:

1. Get CloudBrowse, the easiest method. However, this only will let you play for 15 minutes at a time (if I remember right). After that, you'll have to restart the app.

2. Get a screen sharing app like iTeleport or VNC Viewer - there are free ones out there, but I don't know where they are. Then, set it up and you can view Scratch projects running on your computer - on your iPhone!

3. Jailbreak. You can then either get Frash (Flash for iPhone) and use the experimental viewer, or get Installous and download the Scratch app from there. (I would be careful about jailbreaking if I were you!!)

Hope this helps pass the time until the Scratch app is released - if you want updates from the developer, follow squeaker68882 on Twitter. Have fun!

Please note that while jailbreaking is legal, neither myself nor the Scratch team can be held responsible for anything that it might do to your device. Proceed with caution!

You might also be wondering how to run Scratch projects on an Android device. Most modern Android phones now support Flash, so it should be as simple as opening the experimental viewer in your web browser.

Best of luck to everyone trying to get Scratch running on their device!

Re: Moderator Summary: Scratch on iDevices

I think one suggestion I would have for Scratch on iDevices (and other mobile devices) would to have a mobile version of the site... I occasionally go on Scratch on my iTouch to check my messages, browse the forums, ect. and zooming can be a pain occasionally...

It would be really neat if Apple allowed the Scratch application... Too bad they don't  sad

Maybe Apple thinks that some genius is going to recreate every app from the App Store in Scratch so nobody will have to buy apps anymore. xP

It's 10 min, but in the $5 per month plan you get it unlimited.

If you are having trouble with simple counting, use the following mnemonic device: 1 comes before 2 comes before 5,280 comes before 523,860,759 comes after the square root of -153 comes before π. This will make your previous counting problems seem like no big deal.

Well, you may not be able to have a look at Scratch Projects but you could make an app that enables you to make Scratch Projects! I know a collaboration that are working on this:

I agree, I think a mobile version of the site would be good in order to view everything from this site.

Re: Moderator Summary: Scratch on iDevices

I immediately thought of this when I saw this post. I hate apple. I wonder why they do all sorts of really terrible apps while not selling good apps like scratch.

Be happy! Spring is coming! And spring cleaning...

Re: Moderator Summary: Scratch on iDevices

Would it be possible to release the project files of the rejected app? Registered developers could build the app for themselves and friends without having to go through the app store.

Sorry, just discovered that it was not an official release and therefore no one here can answer the question.  smile

Jailbreaking's a bad idea. I've done it before and I couldn't listen to my music or look at notifications.

You must've done a tethered one or something. I always get jailbreaking only if all the features are available. Read the instructions and precautions carefully because some jailbreaks do limit your device's functionality.
