Top 15 Most Important Games

Below I'd love people to -without thinking too much- list the 15 videogames that are most important. Don't worry about what other people say, this is your opinion on your most important games ever. List only 15 and they don't have to be in any particular order either.

Re: Top 15 Most Important Games

Considering "Most important" is different than favorite, I'm just going to list games I don't know where we'd be without today, even if I think they're overrated.

Also someone already mentioned pac-man and donkey kong, I won't list those.

Super Mario Brothers (NES, This game practically saved the industry)

Ocarina of Time (N64, I find it to be a bit overrated, but It is still a memorable adventure and holds up well today. It introduced the Z-Targeting system, now, where would we be without that?)

Wii Sports (Wii, without this game, the wii's poetential wouldn't have been shown, and nintendo would've had serious problems)

Halo (Xbox, I don't play this game, but if people create their own Xbox Live before it existed just to play with each other, you know there's something special)

Super Smash Bros. (N64, Nintendo actually wasn't planning on bringing over this game, but because it did, it became an instant hit that lead to Melee and Brawl)

Re: Top 15 Most Important Games

Pong - Almost singlehandedly started the video game craze
Donkey Kong - Nintendo's first step into video games
Pacman - This is why people went to the arcade
Super Mario Bros - Saved the video game industry, and launched the most popular video game series ever
Doom - did to PC gaming what Pong and SMB did to the whole video game market
Tetris - One reason handhelds became popular
Pokemon The other reason handhelds became popular

Can't think of any more at the moment  tongue

Re: Top 15 Most Important Games

Half Life - among my favorite games ever, and really if you hate FPS games, this game will prove you wrong. It's nowhere near other FPSes. It's not mindless shooting and killing. It redesigned and reinvented the FPS genre with its story-driven gameplay and groundbreaking graphics.

Super Mario Bros. - this game really did save the video game industry. Video games were going to * and this game literally wrote the future. I still find it fun to play today.

Quake - another FPS that is actually a lot more important to the video game industry than most people may think. Personally, and contrary to popular belief, I actually hate Doom, think it's one of the most overrated games of all time, but Quake is plain awesome. It's important because it was (I think) the first FPS with an online multiplayer, which was revolutionary at that time. Plus Quake is just awesome.

Pong - The video game that pretty much invented video games.

Space Invaders - the original space shooter. Timeless.

Pokemon - The game that made RPGs and handhelds worth playing. No, seriously, I love this series to death. It revolutionized and made the RPG genre fun and new and enjoyable.

The Legend of Zelda - Talking about the original NES version here. I think it's great because it made adventure games fun again and provided us with something fun and fresh. It's also a great counterpart to Super Mario Bros. Also, just a note here, Ocarina of Time is overrated and I hate it to death. Just my opinion.

Metroid - Another game in a trio I like to call the "NES Big Three". I actually don't like the original game too much, actually, but I love the other ones, especially Prime and Fusion. (Fusion holds up among one of my favorite video games of all time, actually the first handheld game I ever played).

GoldenEye 007 - Another fantastic FPS that revolutionized the genre.

Tetris - The best puzzle game ever.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - No, I'm serious. Though it holds up as the worst video game ever made it's also one of the most significant. So yeah.

Team Fortress 2 - It's probably the greatest FPS game ever made. It's just fun! I really don't know what else to say.

Super Mario Kart - Made racing games awesome again (tied with F-Zero).

Killer Instinct - A fighting game that not many people actually know about. It's great, miles better than Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat combined.

Angry Birds - Okay, I really hate to say it, because I hate this game to DEATH I want this game to go die a painful death in a fire in a hole in the DEPTHS OF THE EARTH--okay I'm going insane. It's overrated, but I must say, it really did make mobile smartphone gaming popular.

So yeah, uh, that's the verdict.

Those are all pretty much "fun, recent games" than they are important ones.

I guess you could make a case for Half Life 2, and Minecraft as an indie hit.

I put mostly retro games on my list, some modern games.

But yes, this isn't your favorites list.

Yes but judging by your list a lot of the stuff on there really aren't that important games at all. (Super Mario 3D Land, F-Zero, SSB, Pokemon Stadium). You should replace those with FPS such as Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Quake or Goldeneye, or perhaps, oh what was that game again--HALF LIFE.

Plus you shouldn't care if you hate that genre, those games were really really important. Especially Wolfenstein and Quake and Half Life.

Half Life
QWOP
Sonic Heroes
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Pokemon Diamond
Canvas Rider
Pokemon Colosseum
Limbo
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Civilisation III
Façade
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
Minecraft
Scratch?
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (3D version)

I look for certain qualities like originality (QWOP, Façade, LoZ: OoT) and how much impact they've made on my life (Scratch?, Sonic Heroes, Mario Kart: Double Dash).

It does not show one of the first examples of 3D gaming.

Just because it began a series does not mean it's important.

SSB is a bit important, made fighting games cool.
