I've noticed quite a few people who use emulators now, so I'm wondering, what are your thoughts?
I personally hate emulators and disagree with those who use theme, because it is flat-out PIRACY (They are indeed illegal). The only time I think an emulator would be kinda okay is if the game is not available to buy in that region and not up for sale anywhere else. I'm still kinda bothered, but what are your thoughts?
Also, please don't get too worked up over an opinion, people may disagree with you, but that's their choice, not yours.

No potato is fit for a banana, definitely. To get back to the point, I think emulators are ok, because most of the games they emulate are probably no longer on the market, other than from independent sellers on Amazon and eBay. Examples are Shadowbane, Warcraft I, and Phantasy Star.

It's not illegal if you own a physical copy of the game you're emulating.
Just saying~

In the moral sense, yes, but I believe it still technically is illegal.

I do agree there, but I mostly hear people talking about emulating games you could get cheap off of ebay.

I don't use them, I used them once for trying to record youtube videos. (Didn't work out.)
I generally use the physical copies of games.

I just accept that I can't record that game unless I have a way. I mean, you really only need a capture card because that can record any consoles, and GBA games can be played on a GB player for gamecube. There are also such things as DS and 3DS capture cards, though aren't sold commercially, like this: http://www.3dscapture.com/ds/

I, truthfully, do use emulators.
Though only for a few games on NES, GBA, and Genesis. I mostly play on either my PC or Nexus 7.
Also my friend has an R4.
I mean at least you admitted it.

no because putting a game online for download and downloading that is illegal.

Not good at all. Illegal.

No, it's legal to pirate if you already own the thing that you're pirating or the thing that you're pirating isn't available. So, NES, Genesis, GBA, PS2, etc. emulators are legal.

I've pirated games i had no access to/didn't want to pay tons for
and buy the system online D:

In a legal sense, it is illegal, unless you own the system being emulated and the game being played.
In a moral sense (aka my opinion), I think that if the game and/or system isn't sold anymore, then it is ok. If it's still being sold, then support the developers.
Yes, I use emulators, but only for GB(C and A) games.

Where did you hear this? I haven't found proof that this is true. (the part about pirating something you own)

If the profits from the sales are entirely re-sale based (no profits to creators with my money) I won't care about emulating, morally.

There is no way in my mind that emulation is wrong. It isn't destroying a genre, it's saving it. Nintendo no longer manufactures N64/NES/SNES systems or games, and those already in existence will inevitably begin to fail. The companies no longer are making profit from them. For the sake of preserving the games themselves all old games should be digitized and official emulators (via the console's developer) should be released. I'm fine with emulating games that one legally owns as well, but do not support piracy of more recent titles (maybe 2000 onward, unless it's a really obscure game)

Because it's abandon ware.

Emulators are technically legal because the stuff that is emulated is abandonware.
Personally I love emulators, they help preserve old retro games. Plus it's fun playing all those retro games.

Abandonware actually doesn't apply legally.
And I use emulators mainly for translations of things that were only released in Japan; I'm not going to take the effort to
a) find & buy a Super Famicom
b) find & buy whatever game I want
c) learn Japanese

I'm the exact opposite, I am someone who would go to get an old console and an old game, because simply it just feels more rewarding.

Didn't say I was going to play japanese games. I was planning on learning japanese someday, but also it is kinda funny to not know what the heck you are doing.
