Seeking opinions on translation of "sprite"

I am interested in some general opinions about translation of "sprite", a central Scratch term. I consider changing the translation of "sprite" in the Norwegian translation of Scratch 2.0.

Up to now sprite has been translated as "figur" which can be used as the English "figurine", but also English "figure" which is somewhat confusing in relation to "costume". I am considering to use the term "objekt" instead. This is equivalent to English "object", but somewhat more formal in Norwegian.

I am reasoning that "object" has the pedagogical benefit of pointing towards object oriented programming for the older kids. The risk I see is that for the younger kids, "object" may be unfamiliar and strange. But it could be argued that it just adds to their vocabulary and does no harm. Any opinions?

Re: Seeking opinions on translation of "sprite"

Isn't 'sprite' unfamiliar to some English kids?

I've seen it translated to object in other languages... It probably is more accurate than figure.

Re: Seeking opinions on translation of "sprite"

Interesting, I had the same "problem" when I translated into Swedish. But I sticked to the Sprite word. My first thought was that sprite was pretty familiar to the gamers. But it was probably in the beginning of times (commodore 64 and about then...).

So... I really like Object or Objekt (swedish) but in the swedish translate in Scratch 1.3 - 1.4 is the word Sprite, so they are probably use to Sprite.

Any swedish guys out here, what do you think?
