Hello
I've just been shown Scratch by my 10 yo nephew which he's been learning while attending an after school club (now finished). He's been trying to carry on with his projects and create new ones, but got stuck. I'm his aunty and am a designer who programmes for the web (among other graphic work). I'd done a bit of html with him (before the club existed) so he asked me if I could help - and though I'd not come across Scratch before, I could help him resolve the problem.
This application is brilliant - you clever-clever *and generous* people. Big thank you for developing this (and awesome that it's cross-platform so me - on mac - can share with my nephews - on pc - I'm chuffed to bits!!!) Apologies, I'm gushing a bit aren't I! Anyway, back on topic...
I'm hoping to encourage my nephew to continue (and his younger brother to start). The amount of posting I do here will be determined by how successful I am in that aim. Hopefully their interest will be sustained, I will become familiar with Scratch and be able to give back (here) any help I receive.
I understand html, css, Javascript, php and ActionScript though I will quickly say I'm a generalist so not an expert programmer.
Thanks again and greetings to you!

First off, welcome to scratch!
Scratch is a wonderful program to use. It's really easy to learn, even if self teaching yourself. I would just familiarize yourself with the basics so you can help your nephews later down the road. You might need to help them with the variable concept if they aren't above 6th grade, I think that's when you learn about them. And you also might need to explain a (X,Y) coordinate plane, once again just depends on how old they are.
Hope this helped. I wish you and your nephews good luck.

Hi and thank you for the welcome.
GenChico
I'm having a scout about on this site and there seem plenty of resources to get me started - I'm confident I'll be able to pick it up, orientate myself to this application and make a good start. As for the concepts the boys will need explaining - I didn't get much time to look, properly, at what he'd done as his younger brother was getting frustrated we weren't doing what I'd promised we would do (pencil & paper drawing). I've also no idea what and at what age, here in the UK, they teach at school, so I'm going on what the boys seem capable of grasping.
Thanks again, both of you, Sportsdude6 & GenChico, for the welcome and best wishes to you.

Hello and welcome Damson,
I'm a web-programming expat (taking a serious break from it). If you're accustomed to creating/managing complexity Scratch is full of epiphanies and if you're ambitious you'll find yourself looking forward to revisiting Math and Science in order to make something wonderful.

Hi Dechan
Funny you should say...

Just been having some ideas. Unfortunately I'm stacked-out with 'real' work right now (expecting a client to send me typical content for his new website in the next couple of hours (Sunday evening here in UK, he's a very good client) and don't know when I'll next see the boys either (they're back at school next week) so progress is likely to be sporadic... the fun stuff is always just out of reach isn't it. Thanks for the welcome, hope you're enjoying your break.

Well the fun stuff can be in reach when you try as hard as you can. For example, when I started up Scratch, I never thought that I could make a good, smooth Pac-Man game and other such projects, except where I am, I have! So just persist; you and your nephews could be making big projects any time soon. And remember, feel free to ask questions. ;)
Anyway, hello damson and welcome to Scratch! I wish you a wonderful time here!

Hi ErnieParke - thanks for the encouragement (and welcome). I have been very impressed with the range of abilities Scratch caters for, from kids (young and old) completely new to scripting, on up to experts.
