Odd Sports Rules

So I was watching football highlights, and there was this weeeird ruling in a big NCAA game. It only happened 2 times in NCAA 1-string history, and 2 others and lower college levels.

Basically, everyone thinks that there are 5 ways to score...

1. TOUCHDOWN (7)
2. Field Goal (3)
3. Extra Point (1)
4. Two-point conversion (2)
5. Safety (Pretty rare and unheard of...2)

But one more...

6. Safety.

Not 2 points, but a one point safety, which happens after an extra-point attempt.

EXAMPLE:

Team D scores a touchdown against Team B. D has an extra point field goal blocked. In NCAA rules, the ball is NOT DEAD. Team B picks up the ball in the end zone, and stays there for a prolonged time/laterals. B's player gets tackled in the end zone. ONE POINT.

Holy shizzles. O_o

ANOTHER EXAMPLE:

Baseball: Ground-Rule Triple

If a player throws a glove or other equipment at a ball in the air in an attempt to knock it down, the batter is awarded an autmatic triple.

Any more?  big_smile

Re: Odd Sports Rules

Weird. Is the football rule only in NCAA, or is it in the NFL also?

I believe it could only be NCAA, unless there is an interception/fumble on a two-point conversion that turns into a safety.

No, it's only in NCAA.

Re: Odd Sports Rules

Here's another weird one, courtesy of the NFL: all touchdown plays are reviewed (not weird). But if you challenge the play before the review booth notifies the officials on the field, the play stands as called on the field, it is NOT reviewed, and the coach who attempted to challenge the play is given a 15 yard personal foul penalty.

This happened to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, and to the Green Bay Packers last week!

Re: Odd Sports Rules

And a touchdown is worth 6 POINTS. The extra point makes it 7.

Re: Odd Sports Rules

There was also a NCAA play where a kicker attempted a field goal. He ran up to the ball, kicked it right towards the goal post!!! It nailed the left goal post head on, bounced right back to the kicker who, on the fly, caught it and ran into the end zone. He thought he had scored two points, but officials finally decided no points.
